For the 10th year in a row, Brookfield Academy won first place at the Wisconsin Junior Classical League Competition in Madison. Students take 12 written tests and compete in numerous contests, including the highly competitive "Certamen."
The forensics team won first place among small teams at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Speech Bowl. The competition featured 25 teams and more than 400 student competitors.
The third-grade class is studying immigration and the Great Migration in social studies.
Alex Wang, Linzheng Shi and Hantao Jing qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination from thin which East has had three qualifiers advance to this meet that qualifies students for the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad.
Yearbook pictures are being taken this week. Classroom group pictures, club and activities shots and photos of new students are slated.
All school families are invited to the Milwaukee Art Museum's Kohl's Art Generation Family Sunday program, at which each Burleigh student will have a work of art on display. Students, staff and their families can visit the museum free of charge from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 24.
Deborah Webster's fourth-grade class went to the nature center this week.
The third grade has received a grant to participate in a lab experiment called "Fish In and Out of the Bowl" at Discovery World. They will explore aquatic environments, learn about the life requirements of fish and discover how to replicate them in an artificial environment - that is, mimicking the natural world in an aquarium the students can take back to their classroom.
The forensics team is in the midst of its competition season. Twenty-seven sixth- through eighth-graders compete in categories that include poetry, prose, humorous solo, oratory and infomercial.
Sixth- through eighth-grade girls have been invited to join the Love Our Lives Club in an effort to make this a happy, stress-free and positive year.

Under the guidance of math teacher Sharon Kaminski, the students recently completed a stock market project to learn how math relates to investing and business. Each student chose a company to research. Additionally, the students participated in the mock investment of $10,000 and tracked their chosen stocks over a two-week period.
St. Mary's Visitation
During the Lenten season, students are following the parish theme, "Follow Me." In each classroom students have a special cross poster signed by each student and their teacher to remind them that the Lenten journey of faith is one traveled together as a community. As part of their Lenten almsgiving, each grade is asked to bring in a specific food item to help Feeding America, which provides food to hunger-relief pantries, meal programs and shelters in Eastern Wisconsin.
The winter session of Young Rembrandts, an after-school drawing class, began this week.
The PTO is holding its annual Andrea Steen Crawford blood drive at in Room 110 from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. March 11. Appointments can be made at bcw.edu/Tonawanda. Walk-ins are welcome.
Parent-teacher conferences are being held this week and next. Parents are invited to Infinite Campus training sessions that will be held concurrent with parent-teacher conferences. Topics covered will include how to access the grade book, find missing assignments, determine due dates for items posted in advance and more.
