Elmbrook School District's ACT composite scores remain above state average

When it comes to ACT composite scores, an increase of one-tenth of a point may not sound like much; but for the Elmbrook School District, one-tenth of a point indicates a healthy trend for its schools, which have scored well beyond the state average.

The district's ACT average composite score came in at 25 for 2014. Wisconsin's average composite score for 2014 was 22.2, making the state second in the nation on ACT assessment, according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

Brookfield Central High School's composite score grew from 24.5 in 2013 to 24.7 in 2014. Brookfield East High School's composite score remained the same as last year at 25.3.

"It's more difficult to move a composite score that's already high," said Emily Greiber, director of data, assessment and accountability. "Historically, Elmbrook has outpaced its benchmark districts across the state in both participation and composite score."

Although student participation decreased from the district's all-time-high average of 87.4 percent in 2013, the participation rate is still considered high, Greiber said.

Brookfield Central saw a participation rate of 88.4 percent in 2014 over Brookfield East's rate of 83.9 percent.

The ACT is the most commonly used college admissions test in the region, assessing students' educational development in four academic fields: English, math, reading and science.

"We place great value in the ACT results as a measure of our district's ability to prepare students for college, career and life," stated Dana Monogue, assistant superintendent for Teaching and Learning, in a news release. "Our results in 2014 are promising for both of our high schools, highlighting the work that has already begun in literacy across all content areas."

Under recently-approved state law, all high school juniors will be required to participate in ACT testing for the 2014-15 school year.

Elmbrook anticipates a slight dip in the ACT composite scores for this school year due to the new participation mandate, Greiber said, but "we are looking forward to assessing all students in 2014-15 and maintaining our high achievement scores relative to our benchmark peers."

"We're proud of the district's high composite score and high participation rate (this year)," she added. "And just as our mantra is 'great to greater,' we hope to see a continuous trajectory upward."
