Elm Grove may change zoning code to allow Culver's drive-thru

Nov. 15, 2011 | 7 comments

Elm Grove officials likely won't call it the "Culver's ordinance," but that's basically what it is. Elm Grove is considering creating a village ordinance that will allow a Culver's drive-thru restaurant where Pizzeria Uno once operated.

According to Village Attorney Hector de la Mora, the popular fast-food chain would be the first of its kind in the village in terms of drive-thru food - and a change to village ordinance would be necessary to accommodate the restaurant.

Essentially what the new ordinance, to be taken up by the Legislative Committee on Nov. 17 followed by the Village Board on Nov. 22, would do is simply add "drive-thru" restaurants to the types of businesses allowed in certain zoning districts.

That change would pave the way for current Brookfield Culver's franchise owner Brian Shecterle to bring a Culver's to Elm Grove on Bluemound Road near Pilgrim Parkway. Internal and external renovations to the former Pizzeria Uno building would be necessary to turn it into a Culver's.

No official agreements are in place to bring the business to Elm Grove. For such a move to be made, a change in the zoning would likely be the first step.

NEXT STEP

WHAT: Legislative Committee review of proposed zoning code change

WHEN: 7 p.m. Nov. 17

WHERE: Village Hall, 13600 Juneau Blvd.

  1. BIG mistake ---BIG
  2. Culvers operates a good business model and would be an asset to Elm Grove. Good Move by the the Legislative Committee if they put their blessing on this. Also a good location for the business to become successful. ;)

Oh noes! The sky is falling! People won't have to go inside to order!
  4. If you have ever been to a Culvers, all orders are custom made, nothing standing. Their number system works fine. Because of that system they cater to a lot of folks that come inside and sit down for an enjoyable lunch. Very tasty items also. ;) ;) Fast food but slower and enjoyable. It works nicely. Always room for new ideas in business, what ever it may be. :)
  5. Nothing against Culver's, but there IS a Kopps right down the street.

    Jus' sayin'.

And, honestly, seems to me that another fast-food place is just what that area does not need. A decent non-chain restaurant would probably be much more appreciated. Ahhhh...but gone are the days of the Halfway House, Club-113, Fuzzy's Left-Guard, and of course the "original" Red Mill.
  6. Cool, now we can get a McDonald's in the Yarn House space. Glad I don't have one of the condo's next to the drive through line. Can you imagine hearing the squawk box sputtering our "Do you want fries with that" for 12 hours a day.
