Doctor's new clinic seeks to ensure health before illness sets in
Brookfield Longevity takes big-picture approach to medicine
Life experiences that include being raised in India by missionary parents, education at elite and Ivy League universities in the U.S., and a distinguished career in emergency medicine pale in comparison to his latest venture, a local doctor said.
"Teaching people how to live healthier lives is the most interesting thing I've ever done," said Dr. John E. Whitcomb, who opened the Brookfield Longevity & Healthy Living Clinic in June. "It's rewarding when clients say, 'I've been to six different doctors, but it wasn't until I came to your clinic that I started to feel better.' "
Whitcomb likens the human body to a symphony, citing the need for hormones, in particular, to work in concert with each other. Hormonal discrepancies, the doctor said, can lead to illnesses, such as cancer and heart disease, that may take decades to develop.
To keep the body in tune, Whitcomb conducts comprehensive testing and subsequently works with his clients to customize programs that blend nutritional, spiritual, physical and hormone therapies.
"The key to a long, healthy life is keeping hormones in balance, but age, combined with poor eating habits and a stressful lifestyle causes hormone levels, like testosterone, to decline," he said. "However, changing clients' behaviors with our anti-aging methods, including adding exercise to their routines and supplements to their diets and ridding them of certain toxins, have dramatically improved their health. For example, when treating clients with congestive heart failure, we've seen a 30 percent improvement in the heart's ability to pump."
While the Yale University School of Medicine graduate said he's currently one of only a handful of medical doctors in the Milwaukee area who practices functional medicine, he predicts more are on the horizon.
"This is the future of medicine," said Whitcomb, who also conducts a monthly weight loss lecture series - Weapons of Mass Reduction - at his North Avenue office. "In 30 years there'll be more than 100 doctors like me in the Milwaukee metro area. Being proactive and fine-tuning clients' physiology before it breaks down from disease or illness, only makes sense."
