Creative outlet turns into successful business
Patched Works gives hands-on hobbyists a place of their own
Julie Karasek sought a change of pace from her software career - and an eventual retirement venture - when she purchased Patched Works, Inc. in 2006. Judging by the success of her growing Elm Grove quilt shop, she wasn't alone in seeking a diversionary pastime.
"With the world becoming more digital, I've seen all sorts of different people - both men and women alike - who have turned to 'hands-on' hobbies, like quilting, for their creative outlet," said Julie, who still owns and operates her technology business. "It's the same need that also drew me to this once-in-a-lifetime business opportunity."
The influx of new hobbyists with fresh ideas has brought about an evolution in quilting - one that, according to Julie, Patched Works is on the cutting edge of.
"We stock the latest tools and equipment, then teach how to properly use them," said Julie, a lifelong sewer and quilter. "Our shop encourages experimentation with colors, styles and techniques that broaden horizons. Appliqué, for example, which involves fusing, gluing or stitching blocks of fabric, has been taken to a whole other level. It's so advanced now that quilts look like they've been painted."
Patched Works conducts weekly classes on appliqué and other methods, for all levels of quilting expertise. The 30-minute, demonstration-style lectures were specifically designed, according to Julie, to appeal to the store's on-the-go clientele.
The shop also hosts a quilting retreat, publishes a monthly e-newsletter and holds special events to showcase customers' projects. Monthly meetings at Patched Works, which, she adds, routinely draw attendees from as far away as Chicago and Madison, offer presentations and free samples and patterns.
"Our large customer base of dedicated quilting crafters have really responded to our operation," said Julie, who co-owns Patched Works with her husband, Frank. "We're creating a community that empowers traditional quilters to take on new challenges and provide an environment that encourages artistic freedom."
