Ask NOW: What's the penalty for running a parking lot stop sign?

Feb. 27, 2012

Is there a rumor you've heard you would like to track down? Is there something in the community that needs to get fixed? Mary Malahy answers some of the mysteries of life in the Elmbrook area.

Reader tired of seeing people ignore parking lot stop signs

Issue: A reader has noticed that many people ignore to the stop signs at Brookfield Square and in other shopping center parking lots. She wonders if the penalty for ignoring these signs is the same as those for ignoring the stop signs on the street.

Status: Lt. John Beth with the Brookfield Police Department explained that the penalty for running a stop sign on the street is an $88.80 fine and three points off the driver's license. Running a stop sign in a shopping center is considered a municipal violation; the penalty is a $200 fine but there is no points penalty.
