Ask NOW: Trail flooding creates concern about new path

Nov. 20, 2011 | 0 comments

Is there a rumor you've heard you would like to track down? Is there something in the community that needs to get fixed? Mary Malahy answers some of the mysteries of life in the Elmbrook area.

Trail flooding raises worry about new path

Issue: A reader is concerned about the trails in Wirth Park. A paved path on the west side often has problems with standing water and ice. He noticed another paved path is being built and wants to know why.

Status: Bill Kolstad, director of parks, recreation and forestry, said the original paved path is part of the Greenway Trail System, which links the city's parks together. That segment has problems with flooding because it was built in a flood plain. But, the Parks Department is working with the Engineering Department to fix the problem.

The newly installed path is part of an effort by the city to increase accessibility in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Kolstad said. This path will provide access to two baseball diamonds and a restroom.
