Ask NOW: Is beet juice being spread on the roads?

Jan. 18, 2012

Is there a rumor you've heard you would like to track down? Is there something in the community that needs to get fixed? Mary Malahy answers some of the mysteries of life in the Elmbrook area.

Nature-inspired ice remedy in use on roads in other areas

Issue: A reader has heard about a concoction of beet juice and salt that some cities are using to treat ice and snow covered roads. She heard that the concoction is kinder to concrete and metal and is wondering if Brookfield plans on using it.

Status: I spoke with Richard Paul, highway department assistant superintendent, and he confirmed that some municipalities in Wisconsin are experimenting with using beet juice to treat frozen roads.

But, he said Brookfield has no plans to use the concoction this winter. He said the city needs to do more research before it decides to implement the treatment.
