Is there a rumor you've heard you would like to track down? Is there something in the community that needs to get fixed? Mary Malahy answers some of the mysteries of life in the Elmbrook area.
Bumpy railroad crossings rattle reader
Issue: A reader wants to know if there are plans to improve the railroad crossings on Calhoun or Brookfield roads to make them less bumpy.
Status: Jeff Chase, city engineer, said there are no plans to improve the crossings.
He agreed that the southern crossing on Calhoun is particularly bad, but said it is not due to the condition of the paving. He explained that the railroad increased the banking of the tracks a few years ago to improve train operations. But, this results in a ski jump effect.
Chase said the change was made without the consent of the city and the city has asked the railroad to restore the crossing, but the railroad refused.

Next time you approach the problem crossing, carefully throttle the Deusenburg on up to 60 or so and you'll experience a draft effect from the four ton SUV right in front of you which will completely negate the expected bump. :D
And keep in mind that had the city opted for the bullet train to Madison, the bank in that track would have been increased to 60 degrees or so. This would have rendered a southbound trip to city hall a 'fly by' experience! :o[/b]

Also, in order to actually change the grading of a rail crossing, the road would have to be torn up and the tracks would have to be replaced. This would probably never happen on such a busy track as the ones we have around here.
