Nearly all teachers on preliminary layoff recalled

May 26, 2010 | 0 comments

Only two of the 41 Elmbrook teachers placed on preliminary layoff earlier this spring will be laid off.

Elmbrook recalled six more teachers from preliminary layoff May 25, making a total of 34 teachers recalled, said Christine Hedstrom, assistant superintendent for human resources. The other five teachers resigned either before or after being recalled.

Earlier this spring, the district issued preliminary layoff notices to 41 teachers. Since state statute requires school districts to notify teachers of contract nonrenewal by March 15 - before staffing needs for the following year are clear - Elmbrook issued preliminary layoff notices to teachers it was believed may not be needed next year.

Hedstrom said some staff members volunteered to have their positions reduced to allow those on preliminary layoff to be recalled for part-time positions.
