Public Forum:
Last week's headline "Teachers oppose plan to increase their workload" did not accurately reflect the reason of our opposition. The basis of the opposition is that teachers should be given the time they need to fulfill the district's mission of helping students "to think, to learn and to succeed."
The new block schedule will decrease each class's instructional time by 12 minutes each week (from 245 minutes to 232 minutes), equivalent to one less class period each month. The plan also removes both the zero hour and the extended time at lunch. Both of these periods have provided additional time for students seeking extra help from teachers. Teachers will also be teaching an additional class. Twenty-five to 30 more students will be vying for the time the teachers have available during their teacher prep time, before or after school. Teachers oppose the implementation of a change in schedule before all educational ramifications have been fully researched and shared with the community. This change could potentially have a negative effect on our students.
