'Willy Wonka' cast, crew deserve kudos

March 31, 2010 | 0 comments

Public Forum:

This past week I had the privilege of attending a musical performance of "Willy Wonka," presented by the fourth- and fifth-grade students of Hillside Elementary School. For over 80 minutes I laughed and even shed a few tears as the stage presentation unfolded. Over 100 students, all but a few on stage, enthusiastically participated.

The choreography was extensive and demanding, showing great variety. The attention to detail in creating authenticity in the scenery and props obviously required hundreds of hours to produce. The synchronization and timing of the music demanded a great deal of attention by the sound person. I can't imagine the effort required by those who made the costumes that fit in so well. The stage crew was very efficient and unobtrusive as scenes were changed quickly without slowing the pace of the program. The individual roles were also well-presented, and I was impressed with the solo singing of those young voices.

The entire program was a wonderful example of the great spirit of an elementary school and of what can be accomplished when parents and teachers work together to provide unique, high-quality growth experiences for our children. How fortunate we are to have so many give so much in our community. Such opportunities provide a foundation upon which the Elmbrook middle schools and high schools are able to later produce outstanding musical productions, building in part on these elementary school experiences.

Clearly each of these students has put in many hours to polish their particular role, large or small. My congratulations to all of them.
