How will you attract young families here?

March 24, 2010 | 0 comments

Editor's note: Throughout the mayoral campaign, Brookfield-Elm Grove NOW has asked the two candidates to answer readers' questions about key issues facing the city. This is the final question of the campaign, but you can see all the questions and answers on BrookfieldNOW.com.

One of the Brookfield's 2035 goals is to attract more young families to live in our community. How do you propose to do that?

Jeff Speaker: Our most recent citizen survey shows that one of the most important reasons people move to Brookfield is our excellent school system. I will continue to work with the Elmbrook School Board on matters of mutual interest that will maintain Elmbrook's high ranking as a top school district in the state.

I also have a personal interest in our school system as both of my school-age daughters attend our great public schools here in Brookfield.

Steve Ponto: The most important consideration for young families is having an excellent school system with excellent facilities. That is why I helped promote the successful high school bond referendum by, among other things, drafting a supporting resolution and getting many elected city officials to sign it.

Other important factors for attracting young families which I strongly support are having a safe, attractive community, with a strong library, an excellent park system and convenient shopping.

Finally, I will hold the line on real estate taxes, which is an important factor in making Brookfield affordable.
