Elmbrook board member backs Wilson's candidacy

March 17, 2010 | 0 comments

Public Forum:

A review of Kathryn Wilson's credentials, accomplishments and involvement in the work of the Elmbrook School District leads me to one conclusion: as a non-incumbent candidate, she possesses the highest level of experience, talent and commitment necessary to serve on the Elmbrook Board of Education.

• bachelor of arts, English; Michigan State University

• minor in engineering

• technical writer, project manager for Electronic Data Systems

• chair, Elmbrook Gifted & Talented Parent Advisory Board

• Curriculum Planning Committee

• Assessment and Continuous Improvement Committee

• Middle School Schedule Study Team

• Class Rank Committee

• Distance Learning Study Team

• classroom helper

• school volunteer

• chair, Adult Education Committee Community United Methodist Church

• Executive Board member, United Methodist Women

Mother of four Elmbrook students, ages 7 to 18 with abilities ranging from typical to disabled to gifted, Kathryn knows the spectrum. As a former homeschooler, she has taught the spectrum and developed an extensive knowledge of cognitive development and instructional practices. As an involved parent, she has worked closely with teachers, administrators and residents.

As a current Board of Education member, I know firsthand the unprecedented challenges we face to maintain focus on student learning while considering possible solutions to budget deficits. The various proposals will require careful, balanced analysis: multi-age classrooms at the elementary level, changes to the elective structure at the middle school, adoption of an alternative schedule at the high schools, establishment of a charter school, virtual learning, along with recommendations from the enrollment study team. Our current board has strengths in finance, analysis, policy, communications, strategic planning and commitment to service. Kathryn will bring additional strength in the curriculum/educational practice area, which is vitally important as we go forward.

We need someone who can hit the ground running. I believe Kathryn Wilson is that someone. Please vote April 6 for Kathryn Wilson for Elmbrook Board of Education, at-large seat.
