Absentee ballots available March 17

March 10, 2010 | 0 comments

Brookfield residents who might be spending Election Day on a sun-splashed beach instead of their local polling place - perhaps thanks to the general election coinciding with Elmbrook School District's spring break - can request absentee ballots starting in mid-March, City Clerk Kris Schmidt said.

City residents on April 6 will cast their votes in a number of races, including five contested aldermanic races and one for Brookfield mayor. Residents also will select representatives for three seats on the Elmbrook School Board, as well as chime in on County Board races and two judicial contests.

Residents wishing to vote via absentee ballot can come to the city clerk's counter at City Hall, 2000 N. Calhoun Road, starting Wednesday to request a ballot to fill out. And if they're ready, they can vote that day, Schmidt said.

Otherwise, absentee ballots can be turned in until 5 p.m. the day before the election.

"We always prefer people to come in earlier because that allows clerks to get their work done before the election," Schmidt said.

If a resident can't make it into the office, they can send a written request for a ballot to the city clerk. Requests should be sent to: City Clerk's Office, City Hall, 2000 N. Calhoun Road, Brookfield WI 53005.

The last day the clerk's office can send out absentee ballots is April 1, so written requests must be received before then.

Absentee ballots that are mailed in also must be received before 5 p.m. the day before the election.

Town of Brookfield

The town of Brookfield expects to receive its absentee ballots about March 16, so any town resident wishing to vote absentee can come in and pick one up after that, Town Clerk Jane Carlson said.

Those mailing their absentee ballot requests should send their requests to: Town Clerk's Office, Town Hall, 645 Janacek Road, Brookfield, WI 53045.

Absentee ballots must be returned by April 5.
