Does the city need a high-speed rail station?

March 2, 2010 | 0 comments

Editor's note: Every week this month, Brookfield-Elm Grove NOW will ask the two mayoral candidates to answer a question from one of our readers about an issuing facing the city. To submit a question to one of the candidates, visit BrookfieldNOW.com.

Should there be a high-speed rail station or stop in Brookfield? Why or why not?

- Patrick Morse

Steve Ponto: As a fiscal conservative, I do not support the federal government spending money it has to borrow on projects, such as high-speed rail.

Having a station in Brookfield depends on factors not currently known.

Will sufficient federal funds be available to construct and maintain the contemplated train station, train platform and parking lot? What will be the benefits to the city?

Much will depend on negotiations between the city and other levels of government that have not even begun.

As mayor, I will vigorously represent the interests of Brookfield and only agree to actions I firmly believe serve the city's interests.

Jeff Speaker: This is difficult to answer at this time as we do not have all the information from the state on their initiative on the train.

What are the costs to the cities where it stops? Who's responsible for the maintenance of the station and parking lot? Is there money to make Brookfield a quiet zone with the added train traffic?

If the answers to these questions are given and the city can do a cost-benefit analysis that shows a net increase in revenues, I am for it.

However, I need my questions answered before I will support or oppose this initiative.
