Development post to be filled

Feb. 2, 2010 | 0 comments

The city of Brookfield plans to start recruiting candidates to fill its economic development coordinator position, a job that has been vacant since longtime coordinator Patrick Drinan left it last month.

Mayor Jeff Speaker said the city took a close look at the position, "weighing all the pluses and minuses" after Drinan's departure. He said the city looked at everything from expanding the responsibilities of the job to whether Brookfield should even keep the position.

But Speaker said the job is vital to Brookfield's image as a "business friendly" community. He also noted the job is funded mainly via hotel room taxes.

"Right now, I think it's a big plus for the city of Brookfield to have an economic development coordinator," he said.

The economic development coordinator works with local businesses and the Greater Brookfield Chamber of Commerce on a number of issues, including business development, attraction and retention.

Speaker said the city might look at expanding the coordinator's role to encompass more tasks, adding that city leaders have had only preliminary discussions on the topic.

Nate Cunniff, chairman of the city's Economic Development Committee, suggested that Brookfield could look at similar jobs in other municipalities and compare job responsibilities and the those communities' approaches to the position.

Director of Community Development Dan Ertl said Monday that the city will start recruiting candidates by the middle of this month and hopes to have the position filled by April.
