Second challenger steps into mayoral race

Roger Bielinski wants to make sure city is fair to everyone

Nov. 9, 2009 | 1 comment

A longtime Brookfield resident has announced his intention to join the race for the mayor's office this spring.

Roger Bielinski, 45, filed his declaration of candidacy with the city clerk last week. He joins School Board member David Marcello in challenging Mayor Jeff Speaker, who is seeking a third term.

Candidates must collect signatures, starting no earlier than Dec. 1, and file them with the clerk's office by Jan. 5 in order to have their name appear on the April 3 ballot.

Bielinski, who has lived in Brookfield since 1971, said he wants to make sure local government is "fair and equitable for all people, taxpayers as well as the businessmen."

City government can do more for Brookfield residents, he said. For instance, one of his ideas is to make sure available city jobs - whether in public works, the library or the Fire Department - are opened to Brookfield residents before the city looks for employees outside its borders.

"I feel as though the local governments are obligated to help the citizens that pay the taxes," he said.

Bielinski's only campaign experience was an unsuccessful bid to become general president of Teamsters Local 344.

He currently is studying computer science.

The mayor, who is elected to a four-year term, will make $99,149 a year through 2012, with 2 percent increases scheduled in 2013 and 2014.
