The city of Brookfield's Finance Committee will hold its first meeting on Mayor Jeff Speaker's proposed 2010 budget at 5 p.m. Thursday at City Hall, 2000 N. Calhoun Road.
Under the mayor's proposed budget, Brookfield's overall budget would drop 2 percent to $73.9 million while the tax levy would increase 2.4 percent to $35.1 million.
The city tax rate would bump up to $5.41 per $1,000 of assessed value, meaning the owner of a $300,000 home would pay $1,623 for the city portion of their tax bill in 2010. The owner of a home of that value paid $1,590 in taxes this year.
Other budget hearings are scheduled for 5 p.m. Oct. 7 and 6:30 p.m. Oct. 8.
