City on track to meet state's deadline for master plan

Sept. 29, 2009 | 0 comments

A task force that is helping develop a long-term plan that will guide Brookfield through the next two decades is putting the finishing touches on its work.

The city's 2035 Comprehensive Plan Task Force met for the second-to-last time Monday, giving its approval to the first draft of the plan, which will outline Brookfield's approach to development, transportation, land use and other aspects of city life over the next 25 years.

State mandates require all communities to have a comprehensive plan in place by Jan. 1.

The task force met in a joint session with the Plan Commission on Monday, and both bodies directed consultant Vandewalle and Associates to prepare the second draft of the plan for their review next month.

One of the issues the task force and Plan Commission addressed Monday was the idea of extending the scope of a potential neighborhood plan for the 124th Street area, from the village of Butler south to Greenfield Avenue.

The 124th Street area is one of the city's 10 targeted investment areas, or areas that are likely to see the most redevelopment in coming years, said Dan Ertl, Brookfield's director of community development.

The task force and Plan Commission said the plan should suggest the city engage surrounding communities - Wauwatosa, West Allis, Elm Grove and Milwaukee and Waukesha counties - in discussions about a potential plan for 124th Street farther south.

Two other key issues that came up in recent discussions - the inclusion of a call for an environmental impact study for a possible new Interstate 94 interchange and a potential high-speed rail stop in the city - were reaffirmed Monday by the Plan Commission, Ertl said.

Vandewalle will distribute the second draft of the plan next week, and the task force and Plan Commission will vote on endorsing the plan later this month.

A public hearing on the plan will be held Dec. 1, and the final Common Council vote is expected in mid-December.
