Gibson strayed into politics in decision about speech

Sept. 15, 2009 | 0 comments

Public Forum:

I have lived in the Elmbrook School District since 1977, and prior to that I was the school nurse at Brookfield East for four years. I am not a registered Democrat or Republican, but an Independent who votes for candidates based on their philosophy and their commitment to listening to and representing all people in their districts.

I am very disappointed in Superintendent Matt Gibson's decision not to air President Obama's live television message to schoolchildren in this district. I have read his speech and can find nothing objectionable. In fact, it offers children hope, but also emphasizes hard work is required to accomplish positive outcomes. Granted, the Elmbrook School District is affluent and many of your students are already displaying the qualities needed to achieve success. However, even these high-achieving students could have benefited from hearing their president encourage all students to stay in school, work hard and be all they can be.

According to an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the decision was based on criticism from the anti-Obama conservatives in this school district.

As an educator, Gibson should remain politically neutral when making decisions that impact the students. I am very disappointed in his actions.
