Brookfield's Board of Appeals on July 9 will hear a request for a variance from the developer of Stonewood Village, the shopping center at the heart of a debate about the importance of saving a historic farmhouse.
Developer 4S has introduced a long-term reinvestment plan for Stonewood Village, including the construction of several new buildings on the 8-acre site off Capitol Drive.
An early plan called for the demolition or relocation of a circa-1865 farmhouse, known as the Siepmann home, but 4S changed its plans in a way that would allow the preservation of the building after an outcry from the Elmbrook Historical Society and some Common Council members.
The new plan diverts a drive aisle to the south of the farmhouse, but the Plan Commission and Common Council voted down the plan because the drive aisle falls within the city-owned right of way on Capitol Drive, a violation of city code.
If the variance is approved, allowing the drive aisle to be in the right of way, the plans must return to the Plan Commission for approval before again heading to the council for a vote.
The Board of Appeals, an independent, non-elected group that rules on variances to the city's building and zoning codes, will meet at 7 p.m. July 9 at City Hall, 2000 N. Calhoun Road.
