The Brookfield Fire Department is urging people to be safe this Independence Day and leave fireworks displays to professionals.
The city and town of Brookfield prohibit the use of fireworks without a permit, but paper caps and sparklers are allowed.
According to information from the Brookfield Fire Department, more fires are reported in the United States on July 4 than on any other day of the year, and more than half of those fires are caused by fireworks.
About 9,800 people visited emergency rooms for fireworks-related injuries in 2007. Males accounted for 70 percent of all fireworks-related injuries, and 42 percent of those injured were younger than 15.
Children ages 10 to 14 are 2 1/2 times more at risk of being injured in a fireworks-related incident than the general population.
