Six East seniors suspended for prank banned from graduation

June 4, 2009 | 0 comments

Six Brookfield East High School seniors who built a swing set on the school's roof will not be allowed to participate in the school's graduation ceremony Saturday.

Superintendent Matt Gibson confirmed that the students were arrested early Wednesday morning and given three-day suspensions. The suspension included the students' last day of high school on Wednesday, and will include their graduation ceremony Saturday, Gibson said.

"The intent (of the suspension) was to include the graduation ceremony, even though it's unfortunate that it fell that way," Gibson said.

Since seniors do not have class Thursday and Friday, Gibson said, those days don't count toward the suspension.

The students gained access to the school's roof early Wednesday morning, where they built a swing set as a prank. An overnight construction worker noticed the students and alerted a school custodian who called police and administrators, Gibson said.

Parents of the students have appealed the decision to the superintendent. Gibson said he has not yet responded, but plans to shortly.
