Public Forum:
On the morning of March 6, I visited Burleigh Elementary School with the intent to observe a number of classes as a School Board member. Five minutes after my arrival I was surprised to hear the fire alarm system activated. Immediately I saw children, including some as young as 3 and 4 years old, exiting their classrooms in a very orderly manner.
One minute and 38 seconds later, all 700 children and teachers were outside the building and attendance was being taken. Although some groups (and individual children) were not in their designated locations, all children were individually accounted for less than six minutes after the initial alarm. Five minutes later they were back at their desks, continuing their studies.
I was very impressed with the detailed organization that was in place for the protection and security of our children under an emergency circumstance.
Kudos to Principal Bil Zahn and his staff who have worked very closely with the city of Brookfield Fire Department to develop such an efficient procedure.
