Elm Grove has chance to speak out on 2013 budget

The Elm Grove Village Board will vote on its budget for 2013 next week, a proposal that includes a zero percent tax levy increase.

The tax levy is proposed to remain at $6.4 million to support a nearly $10.7 million expense budget.

Although the proposed tax rate is set to increase to $6.60 per $1,000 of assessed value, the owner of a home assessed at $250,000 would pay $13 less in taxes to the village - about $1,650. That's because many properties' values have decreased.

The 2013 proposed budget, available in detail at the clerk's office, also shows residential user fees for sewer, stormwater and recycling dropping collectively by $17.40, or 2.7 percent, to a total of $627.10 for a single-family residence.

One major change set to occur in 2013 is that the public works and dispatch unions will start paying 50 percent of their pension costs in response to the state's Act 10, Monica Hughes, the village finance director said. Public works, police and dispatch union contracts all expire in 2012, allowing the change to take place. Police are exempt from paying into pension costs.
