Elmbrook offers teachers 1.5 percent base pay increase

July 11, 2012

A tentative agreement giving teachers an across-the-board 1.5 percent increase in base pay retroactive from the 2011-12 school year was reached Tuesday by Elmbrook School District officials and union leaders.

The action was based on the ACT 10 edict that teachers can only bargain base pay.

A potential sticking point in the meeting that lasted less than one hour was whether the district would stand behind the recent School Board decision to give the 1.5 percent increase or go with a 1.64 percent threshold provided in late March by the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission. Guided by ACT 10, the WERC used the Consumer Price Index to set the rate.

If the district, which had budgeted just more than $502,000 for the increases, had agreed to the higher amount, it would have meant an extra $32,000 expenditure.

The next steps in the process include working out contract language, a union ratification this summer and a board vote that is expected to take place no later than the end of September.
