Free concerts to fill summer nights with music

Three venues offering variety of sounds

June 12, 2012

This summer brings forth multiple opportunities for families and friends to get out and enjoy free concerts in their community.

Three concert series will be occurring in Brookfield and Elm Grove this summer. These series are Tunes on Tuesdays in Elm Grove, Starry Nights at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts and the Plaza Centre Stage Concerts in the city of Brookfield.

Tunes on Tuesdays

Elm Grove will host four outdoor concerts at the gazebo in Village Park this summer for its Tunes on Tuesdays series.

These performances will begin at 6:30 p.m. and end about 8:30 p.m. They are free, and it is recommended that guests bring their own blanket or lawn chair for seating.

The series will begin June 19 with Andrea and the Mods playing the best music of the 1960s through 1980s and pop country.

Southern Tradition will perform country music July 10.

Leahy's Luck will showcase Irish folk music July 31.

Finishing up the series will be The Pink Flamingoes, playing sing-along rock songs, Aug. 14.

These concerts are sponsored by WaterStone Bank, the Elm Grove Business Association and the Elm Grove Community Foundation.

Plaza Centre Stage

Brookfield will showcase two sets of concerts at its Plaza Centre Stage performances. One series will run from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesdays, and the other will be from 7 to 8:15 p.m. on select Wednesdays.

Day-time performers include Bobby Way on June 13, Ernest Collins on June 20, Heat Duo on June 27, Marcell Guyton on July 11, Dusk on July 18, Al White on July 25, the Jenny Thiel Trio on Aug. 1, The Happy Dutchman Trio on Aug. 8 and Downtown Harrison on Aug. 15.

Evening performances include Bobby Way and the Fabulous Wayouts on June 13, Piles of Rhythm on July 11 and the North Coast Orchestra on Aug. 15.

Guests will be able to bring their own food and drink, but there also will be food from Angelina's Deli available for purchase.

Limited seating at tables is available, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets to sit on.

Starry Nights

The Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts, located in Mitchell Park at 19805 W. Capitol Drive, will host its Starry Night series every Friday from June 22 through July 27.

These concerts will begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 8:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Guests are allowed to bring their own food and beverages to the concerts, and there will be food and bar vendors on site.

The Wilson Center will begin its series with a performance by the Wilson Center Starry Nights Orchestra with the Florentine Opera on June 22.

Other performers this summer include Leahy's Luck on June 29, Carey Ott on July 6, Orquesta Tumbao on July 13, Southern Tradition on July 20 and the Wilson Center Big Band on July 27.

Because of renovations happening on part of the outdoor concert venue, this year's concert series will be set up on the south side of the building.

Attendees are welcome to bring their own chairs or blankets; spots fill up on a first-come, first-served basis.
