Parades, family fun and fireworks will be on tap at local Independence Day celebrations this weekend.

City of Brookfield

Action begins in the city of Brookfield at 10 a.m. with a parade featuring the "Wacky Wheeler," who performs acrobatic stunts on a giant rotating wheel.

The parade route begins on Gebhardt Road, continues north on Calhoun Road, left on North Avenue, south on Norhardt Drive and concludes at Civic Drive.

Then, Family Fest begins at 6 p.m. in Mitchell Park, 19900 River Road, with food and fun for the entire family.

"A rock group, Our House, will play on the pavilion at Mitchell Park. They've been at Family Fest for the last four years, and people like them," said Lisa Gelenn, a recreation supervisor with the city's Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry.

Also, Gelenn said, "Heads Up Juggling" and magician Glenn Gerard will perform on the children's stage.

"They juggle all kinds of items, including fire," she said.

There will be a variety of activities including face painting, obstacle courses and bounce houses for children at a cost of $1.

In addition, local vendors will be selling food.

The evening will conclude with a fireworks show, sponsored by Safro Motorcars, at 9 p.m.

"Arrive early for good parking," Gelenn suggested. "There's plenty of parking, but the earlier you get there, the better spot you'll get."

Town of Brookfield

The town of Brookfield will kick off its Independence Day celebration with a parade at 9 a.m.

Chad Brown, of the town Parks and Recreation Department, said the parade will begin on Davison Road and continue south on Lindon Lane to Marx Park.

Then, a full slate of activities - including a pie-eating competition, marshmallow golf and the fire department hose down - are scheduled in Marx Park.

"It's a fun day for everybody," Brown said.

Brats, hamburgers and other food will be sold by local vendors.
