District office will be open for School Board candidates

The Elmbrook School District's Central Administration Office, 13780 Hope St., will be open Dec. 28 for any School Board candidate who wants to pick up or turn in nomination papers.

The office will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. that day. It is closed the rest of the week.

Nomination papers must be submitted by 5 p.m. Jan. 4 for anyone interested in running for the three seats up for election this spring.

Memorial funds established for former district employees

The Elmbrook Education Foundation has announced that two memorial funds have been established in the name of longtime Elmbrook employees.

Memorial funds have been established in the name of Irven Hoesly and Landis Knutson.

Hoesly, who died May 5, was the first principal of Pilgrim Park Middle School, serving from 1966 until his retirement in 1985. Hoesly's family has asked that money in the memorial fund be used to provide a minimum of one continuing education scholarship for a graduate of both Brookfield East and Brookfield Central for the next four years. The remaining balance of the fund will be held on reserve to be applied to Elmbrook Education Foundation programs at the family's discretion.

Knutson, who died in November, was a principal at Fairview North, Leland, Swanson and Wisconsin Hills during his more than 30 years with the district. Money in the memorial fund will be held on reserve pending direction from Knutson's family.

East debate coach Sexton inducted into hall of fame

Brookfield East High School debate coach Steve Sexton was inducted into the Wisconsin Debate Coaches Association Hall of Fame at the 2010 State Tournament at Ripon College on Sunday.

Sexton earned coach of the year honors in 2009, and, in just three years, has increased the participation on the team from three to 30 students.

East's team this year won the state championship in Lincoln Douglas Debate and finished third in Public Forum Debate, as well as advancing debaters Aditya Trivedi, Advik Shreekumar and Chih-Wei Wu to the top 32 in the International Public Policy Forum competition.

Sexton is a social studies teacher at Greenfield High School. He coached at West Bend High School, Dominican High School and St. Mary's Academy prior to coming to East.
