Public Forum:
Following the Elmbrook School Board's Aug. 11 decision to have the Brookfield East football stadium lights removed with no apparent defects identified through the two inspections performed by the firms hired by the school district, I wrote an e-mail to the School Board members expressing my frustration with this decision and the process followed to make it.
Subsequently, I attended both meetings where the follow-up plans were to be discussed. Over the course of those meetings, I learned much more about what information had been made available to the board, the assumptions they were working under and the time pressures that had been imposed on them.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to observe how the current board members dealt with community input and digested new information as they received it.
I'm writing, not to commend the board for their decision, but for the process they followed, their active acceptance of feedback from the community and the manner in which they digested the new information presented. It was obvious that a number of the members had spent significant time individually researching the issues and seeking out answers.
The result of this process is a well thought-out, pragmatic approach that protects the taxpayers' interests while ensuring the safety and efficacy of our school environments.
Again, I commend the School Board on their open communication and willingness to adjust their views and opinions based on access to new information - it was a refreshing experience in public discourse.
