Illiteracy hurts. It denies dignity, lessens human accomplishments and impairs the potential of people to succeed. Those were the words Jerry McCormick of Elm Grove used to explain the purpose of the Golden K Kiwanis and the reason the Elm Grove chapter sponsored a spell-down to benefit Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha.
A number of Waukesha County Kiwanis chapters participated, including the Muskego team of Aaron Robertson, Marge Ingold and Michael Pierski; Waukesha Noon, Bill Humphreys, Darrel Johnson and Kristin Hansen; Pewaukee, Cliff Muehlenberg, John Hoaglaund and Bill Nicholson; Waukesha Early Risers, John Schmitz, Miguel Ocampo and Alcy Sivyer; and Hartland, Nancy Massnick, Dave Drebert and Pete Roidt. The Hartland team won.
Pronouncing words at the competition was Denise Zantow, serving as master of ceremonies was Larry Holloway, and chief judge was Bill Martens. All of them are members of the Elm Grove Golden K.
