Senate candidates to face the public in forum at City Hall

Sept. 1, 2010 | 0 comments

The candidates in two local races for the state Senate are scheduled to go head to head in a forum next week at Brookfield City Hall.

Republican Leah Vukmir and Democrat incumbent Jim Sullivan, who are running for the hotly contested 5th District seat, and Republicans Tim Dietrich and Rich Zipperer, who are competing in the 33rd District, are expected to participate in the forum, which is set from 8 to 9 a.m. Wednesday in the Common Council chambers, 2000 N. Calhoun Road.

The forum will be hosted by the Greater Brookfield Area Chamber of Commerce and is co-sponsored by Brookfield-Elm Grove NOW and Brookfield Rehabilitation and Specialty Care.

5th District a key battle

Vukmir and Sullivan are vying in the Nov. 2 general election in a race that could determine which party controls the state Senate. The two candidates have raised more than $400,000 in campaign contributions from all over the country. There is no primary election in that race.

The 5th District encompasses all of Elm Grove and parts of Brookfield.

Dietrich and Zipperer, who will appear on the Sept. 14 ballot, are seeking to replace state Sen. Ted Kanavas, a Republican who is not seeking re-election. Since there are no Democrat candidates in that race, the primary winner is all but certain to become the district's next senator. The 33rd District includes portions of Brookfield.

Questions for the candidates can be e-mailed to bcc@brookfieldchamber.com by 5 p.m. Friday.

The event is free and open to the public, however, advanced registration is requested. To reserve a spot, contact the chamber at (262) 786-1886 or bcc@brookfieldchamber.com">bcc@brookfieldchamber.com.

Second time around

This marks the second time that Brookfield-Elm Grove NOW is teaming up with the chamber to provide voters with an up-close look at the local candidates. The two organizations co-sponsored a forum in the Brookfield mayor's race prior to the spring primary.

"The Greater Brookfield Chamber of Commerce is again pleased to partner with NOW Newspapers and Brookfield Rehabilitation and Special Care to bring the community a forum in these key legislative races," chamber President Carol White said. "We think it's important for the business community - and residents in general - to know where the candidates stand on the key issues facing Wisconsin and our community."
