Air conditioning to paving, schools sporting summer upgrades
Elmbrook spent $4.4 million on buildings and grounds
Students and teachers aren't the only ones getting ready for the start of the new school year.
School district maintenance staff and contractors are finishing up a spate of repairs and upgrades to school buildings in time for the first day of school, Sept. 1.
Many of the projects, totaling about $4.4 million, already are finished. Those still under way will wrap up soon, said Elmbrook Director of Facilities Scott Miller.
Here's a look at some of the biggest summer projects:
Brookfield East and Central
Work crews are finishing an extensive, two-year, $62.2 million renovation of both high schools. Major work this summer included new entrances, remodeled administrative spaces and continued work on classrooms and common areas.
In addition to the referendum construction, workers repaired drainage plumbing beneath the Central football field, a project intended to protect the artificial turf from flood damage.
New bleachers have been installed at the East soccer field. The soccer stadium also is sporting a new gateway entrance, funded by athletics booster Brookfield East 2010 and Beyond.
Fairview South
An area of the roof was replaced and the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system was remodeled.
Pilgrim Park Middle School
Students will immediately feel a big change when they walk into Pilgrim Park, where a new air-conditioning system was installed this summer as part of a complete replacement of the building's heating and ventilation equipment.
The new HVAC system is replacing a failing, 50-year-old boiler system, bringing climate control to parts of the school that have in the past topped 90 degrees during warmer months of the school year.
The new system is expected to cost more to run, but less to maintain than the old equipment. Also, air conditioning will allow the district to consolidate its summer school in Pilgrim Park starting next year, a move officials have said will bring some cost savings.
The project is budgeted at $3.68 million. Cooling accounts for about $817,000 of that cost.
Burleigh Elementary
An area of the roof was replaced.
Swanson Elementary
Part of the roof was replaced and an area behind the building has been newly paved.
