An Elmbrook School District official is recommending the district pay half the costs to set up temporary stadium lights at Brookfield East's football field this fall and wait until next summer to replace the four existing light poles, which are part of a nationwide recall.
The board voted earlier this month to remove the light poles but did not take any action on possible replacement. Two engineering firms found no major defects in the poles, which are scheduled to be taken down in the coming weeks.
A memo to School Board members from Keith Brightman, assistant superintendent for finance and operations, suggests the district pay $13,000 to set up temporary lights for East's home football games this fall. The other $13,000 will come from a variety of sources, such as East's parent-teacher organization and the school's booster club.
The other possible short-term solution would be a combination of earlier game times and moving some games to Brookfield Central.
Waiting until next summer to replaces the poles will allow the district to include funding for the project in its 2011-12 maintenance budget, the memo says. The total cost of removal and replacement is estimated at $200,000.
The board will discuss and take action on the long- and short-term replacement options at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the district's central offices, 13780 Hope St.

DonMoney....reading is such a lost art! With very little effort you'd have seen that the inspections cost $7000.

We need TAXPAYER supporters. People making responsible decisions on behalf of the taxpayers in the district. Doesn't matter where your kids go to school...it's still ELMBROOK.

NB - the company that provided the lights/posts is bankrupt.

Let's see...they board wasted money on TWO inspections that they ignored, and now they want to waste more money on temporary lights? Seems like some of the board needs to be replaced!

Rose27, excellent commentary, I agree with your statement 100 % very well said. The company that has the recall out on their defective posts should pay for all the replacement cost. Also if an engineering firm has looked at the posts and there is nothing wrong with them as indicated by the recall , why take them down at all ?? If we paid for the engineering firms to look at them but don't use their analysis why hire them also, more taxpayers dollars down the drain. Kind of reminds me of Brookfield road being repaved after only a few years.

This must be a joke. As the Elmbrook district is shoving block scheduling down our throats and supposedly cutting expenses, now they want to pay for temporary lights. We are going to spend all that money on temporary lights and each game is lucky to make $1100. As an East parent I will never support the PTO or the Spartan Athletic Booster Club again if this is where they plan to spend my contributions. Play the games at Central. They use our field house, we can use thier football field. In these tough economic times what are we teaching our kids? How spoiled are they? There is nothing worse than the attitude of "this is the way we always we do it." Grow up and learn that life is how you adjust to plan "B".

How's this solution; East boosters, PTO, etc pony up the FULL amount? That would surly be better than playing at Central.

Any solution is better than having to play at Brookfield Central.

How stupid is it to order an inspection, if all along you planned to disregard thier findings?
How much money was wasted on inspections?

Find it very hypocritical that the district would ding the booster club for some
costs, when BC(2) still owes what, $250,000 or so (?) on the artificial field they
promised to pay for - and it's never coming? I think there's too many Central
supporters and not enough East supporters on the school board.
