Edward James Callan

Edward James Callan of Elm Grove and Oconomowoc Lake died July 27, 2009.

He was the son of Irish immigrant John Nicholas Callan and Mattie Somers Callan. He grew up on 18th Street and Clybourn Avenue in Milwaukee. He attended Gesu Elementary School and graduated from Marquette University High School in 1937. He attended Marquette University prior to serving in World War II as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, stationed in China, India and Australia.

He was an appraiser for the Milwaukee County Probate Circuit Court for many years and the owner of the John N. Callan & Sons Real Estate and Insurance Agency. He practiced real estate in the Milwaukee metropolitan area for 68 years. He also served as vice president and secretary of the James L. Callan Investment Real Estate Co.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jane (nee Sell) Callan; children, Deborah Callan Quirk (James Brandt) of Watertown and Tesuque, N.M., Susan Callan Young (Timothy O.) of Elm Grove, and Nancy Callan Latta (Richard A.) of Madison; grandchildren, Kate Callan Latta, Timothy Sell Young and Emily Ann Young; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, James L. Callan, Mary C. Krembs, John M. Callan, Robert E. Callan, Michael S. Callan, Anne P. Callan and Joseph P. Callan II; and father-in-law, Olive R. Sell.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 1 at Gesu Church. Graveside services were at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Marquette University High School, 3401 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53208; or Gesu Parish, 1210 W. Michigan St., Milwaukee, WI 53201.

The Callan Family thanks the staff of 3 North at Franciscan Woods for their compassionate care of Mr. Callan over the past few months.
