Audrey Evers (formerly Silver, nee Gratz) of Brookfield died June 21, 2009, at age 66 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Education was her lifelong passion. She graduated with honors from Libertyville High School in 1960. She attended Lawrence University and was president of Pi Beta Phi sorority, where she was voted best loved, and earned a Bachelor of Arts and political science degree in 1964. She taught school for several years and served as province president of Pi Beta Phi before her children were born.
She devoted the next phase of her life to Sara and Rhett and always was an active advocate for their education. She completed a master's degree in educational administration and supervision from Marquette University in 1981.
She taught government at Horning Middle School and economics at Waukesha South High School for three years before becoming assistant principal of Waukesha South in 1985. In 1989, she became associate principal of Wauwatosa West High School. In 1990, she was promoted to principal of Wauwatosa West, a position she proudly held for a decade. She was a distinguished leader and mentor who had lifelong impact on countless students, teachers and staff.
After learning of her illness and of Tom's, she retired in 2000 to direct her love and energy to her private life. Tom and Audrey traveled the world. Highlights included China, Europe, Egypt, New York City, cruises and coastal beach vacations. She traveled with Rhett to Australia this past April.
Among her many interests were her grandchildren, gardening, photography, reading and advocating for Tom's medical care as well as for her own. She was a loving and devoted caregiver to Tom.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas; children, Rhett Silver and Sara Silver-Traband; son-in-law, Tyler; grandchildren, Simone and Sawyer Traband; mother, Genevieve; sister, Catherine Gratz Griffin; nieces and nephew, Ken, Kelly and Loren; stepchildren, 10 grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Wayne Gratz.
Service was June 26. Private family time was at Wisconsin Memorial Park.
Memorials are suggested to the Clinical Cancer Center at Froedtert Hospital and Education Foundation of Wauwatosa.
Her family thanks Dr. Christopher Chitambar, Mona and the numerous wonderful staff members at Froedtert Hospital who were critical thinkers and compassionate friends every step of the way.
Becker Ritter Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
