Sister Susan Michelle Dubec
School Sister of Notre Dame Susan Michelle Dubec died June 5, 2009, in Milwaukee at age 64.
She was born in Milwaukee on Nov. 10, 1945, to Michael Joseph and Hazel (nee Kettner) Dubec. Baptized Mary Ann, she was the second of three daughters in the family. Her elementary education was at St. Joseph School in Milwaukee, where she was taught by School Sisters of Notre Dame.
During eighth grade, she first expressed the desire to become a sister. Upon graduation, she entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame Aspiranture in 1958, which was located at St. Mary's Academy in Prairie du Chien. The following year, the school re-located at the School Sisters of Notre Dame Motherhouse in Mequon as Caroline Academy.
She professed her vows as a School Sister of Notre Dame in 1964. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education at Mount Mary College. She earned a Master of Arts in school administration at Clark College, Dubuque, Iowa, and a master's degree in pastoral studies at Loyola University, Chicago.
She served as a teacher and principal at various schools until she was called to mission ministry in Alaska as a religious education coordinator and pastoral administrator. Upon her return to Wisconsin, she worked as a pastoral associate and minister to the sick and homebound. Also, she was elected to School Sisters of Notre Dame leadership, serving as a councilor for the Milwaukee Province.
Her ministry locations included Arcadia; Oconomowoc; Milwaukee; Elkhorn; Alakanuk, Alaska; Sheldon Point, Alaska; Kalskag, Alaska; Chevak, Alaska; Chicago; Madison; and Elm Grove.
She is survived by her sister, Shoshanna (Nasayah) Glick; step-brothers, Bob (Carol) Kettner and Gordon (Diane) Kettner; nieces, nephews, other relatives and the School Sisters of Notre Dame community.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Helen Duffrin.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 10 at The Holy Family Chapel at Notre Dame of Elm Grove.
Memorials are suggested to the School Sisters of Notre Dame retirement fund.
