Kummer, 70 years

Dolores and Fritz Kummer

May 12, 2009 | 0 comments

Fritz and Dolores Kummer will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on May 15, 2009.

They were married May 15, 1939, at St. Mary's Church, South Milwaukee.

Former star athlete Fritz and his biggest cheerleader Dolores (nee Kroll) attended South Milwaukee High School. She was at most of his track and cross country meets. Fritz earned three first-place finishes in state cross country championships and one first place in the one mile track event at state. "Running Wild" became his anthem, played at school pep rallies.

Fritz is one of few South Milwaukee athletes to set this individual record. The school honored his achievement with a banner of recognition in the auditorium with the entire student body present, who cheered for the couple as if they were the students' peers.

Fritz retired from Ladish Co. after 40 years. He made parts for the war effort, working long hours and sometimes not coming home for days.

Dolores worked at Kyle Co. making bomb castings during the war years, but she had her most fun job at G&G's Sweet Shop, where she peeled potatoes for the yummy french fries. She finished her working years at Terry's Grocery Store, fondly called "Grandma Grocery Store."

Fritz and Dolores, residents of South Milwaukee, are the parents of Claudia (Terry) Ciurlik of Brookfield, Jim (fiancée Carrie) of Wind Lake, Kathleen Robee of Oak Creek and Gordon (Lois) of Milwaukee. They have 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Fritz, who turned 90 on May 14, and his childhood sweetheart Snooky are still running strong and still "running wild."
