School Sister of Notre Dame Alice Lechnir died March 27, 2009, at age 84.
She was born in Prairie du Chien on July 1, 1924, to Henry and Anna (Zeman) Lechnir. She was baptized Alice Josephine and was the fourth of five children.
She attended Prairie du Chien public school for kindergarten, first and second grades. She completed her elementary schooling at St. John, where she was taught by the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
After her graduation from Prairie du Chien High School in 1942, she found work in Milwaukee. She was employed as a stenographer and secretary with Bruce Publishing Co. before entering the School Sisters of Notre Dame candidature. Her religious name was a great source of joy to her parents, for it was a combination of their names.
She celebrated her first profession of vows as a School Sister of Notre Dame in 1946. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Mount Mary College with a major in secretarial science and minor in business administration. She earned her Master of Arts degree in English at DePaul University.
She served as a teacher and principal. In later years, she worked in spiritual renewal and served as archivist at the School Sisters of Notre Dame Motherhouse.
Her ministry locations were Detroit; Chicago; Chippewa Falls; Escanaba, Mich.; Oshkosh; Little Falls; Milwaukee; and Elm Grove.
She is survived by relatives, friends and the School Sisters of Notre Dame community.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 30 at The Holy Family Chapel at Notre Dame of Elm Grove.
Memorials are suggested to the School Sisters of Notre Dame retirement fund.
