Report of injured man leads to 2 drunken driving arrests

June 29, 2009 2:30 p.m. | City of Brookfield police arrested two suspected drunken drivers at the same time on the same street.

According to a Brookfield police report:

Police responded to a call of an unconscious man lying facedown in a driveway in the 17400 block of Ashlea Drive about 8:15 p.m. June 22. The caller said the man was bleeding.

When officers arrived, they determined the 54-year-old Brookfield man had driven his car home and tripped on the driveway, causing the injuries. Lancers play Hamilton tough but fall short

By David Cotey

March 12, 2010 6:25 p.m. | The underdog Brookfield Central boys basketball team overcame an early 11-point deficit against Milwaukee Hamilton but ultimately fell short, 47-43, in a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal in Greenfield on Friday.

Hamilton's Darnell Harris scored a team-high 15 points and Jalonnie Parks added 14 for the Wildcats (19-3), who will play Racine Park or Waterford in the sectional final at 7 p.m. Saturday, also at Greenfield.

Hamilton's Kiwane Crowder scored four of his nine points in the closing minutes, including a pair of baskets that gave his team late leads.

Central's Alex Diciaula's 3-pointer with less than 3 minutes remaining, tied the game at 41-41, but Crowder made a fade-away jumper shortly thereafter to give his team the advantage.

After the Lancers' Nick Olson sank two free throws with less than 2 minutes left, Crowder struck again, this time another jumper with about 1 minute to go that put his team up, 45-43.

Federal grant will pay for defibrillators for Fire Department

By ALAN HAMARI

March 12, 2010 1:26 p.m. | The city of Brookfield Fire Department today received an $89,000 grant to purchase paramedic defibrillators.

The new defibrillators will allow the city to provide a higher quality of care, Fire Chief Charlie Myers said in a news release. More than 40 percent of the patients treated by the department require advanced cardiac monitoring, which the new defibrillators would provide.

The grant, which requires a city contribution of $9,900, will be used to purchase three defibrillators.

The grant is administered through the Department of Homeland Security.

Developer hopes to bring Target, senior apartments to Brookfield

By Tom Daykin of the Journal Sentinel

March 11, 2010 11:35 p.m. | Minneapolis-based developer Ryan Cos. has agreed to buy a 23-acre site in Brookfield, formerly the site of a printing plant, where the company hopes to develop a Target discount store and senior apartments.

That's according to two real estate industry sources who spoke about the project on the condition that their names not be published.

A Ryan executive didn't return phone calls Thursday. A Target spokesman said the company hasn't announced plans for a new Brookfield store. Typically, Target announces its new stores one year ahead of when the store will open, spokesman Kyle Thompson said.

Dan Ertl, Brookfield's director of community development, said the former Quebecor World printing plant is under contract to a developer. But he declined to identify the developer, saying no project plans have yet been filed with the city.

A Quebecor World spokesman also declined to comment, citing a confidentiality agreement with the developer. The printing plant, which closed in 2006, would be demolished to make way for the new developments.

Revised Red Robin plan gets panel's OK

By ALAN HAMARI

March 09, 2010 9:20 a.m. | The city's Plan Commission on Monday unanimously approved plans for a new Red Robin restaurant at Brookfield Square, a month after they told designers to come up with a more creative look for the building.

Red Robin, a gourmet burger chain with nine locations in Wisconsin, plans to build a 5,700-square-foot restaurant and bar at the site of the former Houlihan's restaurant on the mall's east side between Barnes & Noble and Mitchell's Fish Market. The Houlihan's building will be razed.

Members of the Plan Commission last month tabled any action on the plans, but representatives from Red Robin presented revamped plans Monday that increased the size of the restaurant's entryway and added more architectural elements on the building's north side.

The Common Council will vote on the Plan Commission's recommendation Tuesday.

Buy Buy Baby coming to Brookfield

By Doris Hajewski of the Journal Sentinel

March 09, 2010 8:00 a.m. | Buy Buy Baby, the division of Bed Bath & Beyond that is devoted to baby products, will open its first Wisconsin store in Brookfield, in the Fountain Square shopping center.

The store will go in the space formerly occupied by Circuit City, according to local sources. A spokeswoman for Bed Bath & Beyond said she couldn't confirm the new store plans, but acknowledged that the company is advertising on its Web site for a manager for the store.

Buy Buy Baby's format is similar to the parent company, with merchandise for babies through age 3. The company offers a wide range of brands, including high-end items such as Stokke strollers for $1,000, and designer diaper bags that sell for over $300.

Buy Buy Baby has 29 stores around the country. The chain was acquired by Bed Bath & Beyond in 2007.

Brookfield man arrested in suspected assault of teen

March 08, 2010 5:44 p.m. | Wauwatosa police have arrested a 48-year-old Brookfield man suspected of abducting and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl Saturday, a police spokesman said Monday.

Police expect to refer the case to the Milwaukee County district attorney's office Tuesday, Lt. Dominic Leone said. The man is in custody at the Milwaukee County Jail, Leone said.

The girl, a resident of Menomonee Falls, told police the man abducted her and then sexually assaulted her in an apartment near N. 111th St. and W. Meinecke Ave., police said.

The girl was able to get out of the apartment and call police.

The man was arrested Saturday night while he was driving near the apartment, police said.

Large senior apartment development proposed in Brookfield

By Tom Daykin of the Journal Sentinel

March 08, 2010 11:32 a.m. | A Middleton-based developer is proposing a 186-unit apartment community for seniors in Brookfield.

Nakoma Development LLC wants to build the apartments on 30 acres at 1300 S. Barker Road, said Dan Ertl, city planning director. The project would include six two-unit townhouses, with the remaining 174 units spread among four larger buildings, he said.

The project site has been used as a landfill for clean construction industry debris, Ertl said.

There is increased demand for senior apartments in Waukesha County because of the county's aging population, said Robert Schwarz of Nakoma Development. The apartments will have market rents, and be conventionally financed.

The plan will have its initial conceptual review at tonight's Plan Commission meeting, which begins at 6:30 at City Hall.
