Lancers boys, girls sweep Spartans

Feb. 10, 2012 9:47 p.m. | Both the Brookfield Central girls and boys teams swept Brookfield East for the second time this season, winning their games by a combined 59 points.

The Central girls did most of the damage, beating East by 41 points, 67-26, while the boys won by 18, 65-47.

Two 3-point shooters set the tone for each game. For the girls, junior Debbie Entzminger tied a school record with 6 treys, on the way to a 22-point night. Entzminger averaged 5.9 points coming into the game.

After an exciting 14-11 first period, the Lancers got a combined 15 points in the second period from Anna Liewen (9) and Entzminger (6) to roll to a 20-4 quarter and a 34-15 halftime lead. Central was even better in the third quarter with a 24-5 run to lead 58-20 after three quarters. This time Entzminger (8) and Liewen (6) combined for 14 points in the quarter.

Brookfield alderman dies after knee surgery

Feb. 08, 2012 4:02 p.m. | Brookfield - The city is mourning the loss of longtime Ald. James A. Garvens, who died Wednesday of complications after having knee replacement surgery Monday, Mayor Steve Ponto said.

"We had no idea this was a life-threatening situation," Ponto said. "It was an incredible shock."

Ponto said Garvens' blood pressure dropped Tuesday, but rallied later in the day.

"His wife went home for the night and then got a call from the hospital to come back because his blood pressure was declining again. He passed away early this morning (Wednesday). . . . I think it was the strain on his heart as a result of the operation. I think the operation itself in terms of replacing the knee went well. It's just that it was too hard on his heart."

Of Brookfield's current aldermen, Garvens, 75, was the longest serving, Ponto said.

Full appeals court to hear Elmbrook graduation arguments

Feb. 08, 2012 10:24 a.m. | The full panel of judges on the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments Feb. 9 to decide whether it was constitutional for the Elmbrook School District to hold its high school graduations at Elmbrook Church for the better part of the last decade.

The granting of a full review is a victory for Americans United, which filed a suit on behalf of nine unnamed district families who said the environment made them feel unwelcome and uncomfortable.

A three-member panel of the Court of Appeals in September, 2011, ruled in Elmbrook's favor.

"Public school students and parents should not be forced to spend hours in an intensely religious environment in order to attend their own graduations," said Alex J. Luchenitser, American United's legal director. "I look forward to presenting our arguments to the Court of Appeals."

Brookfield Central held its graduation ceremonies at Elmbrook Church from 2000 to 2009. Brookfield East held its graduations there from 2002 to 2009.

Meet Hari Trivedi, candidate for governor

Feb. 06, 2012 8:53 a.m. | If you watched hours of Super Bowl coverage on Sunday, you may have noticed a couple of ads by Hari Trivedi, a relative unknown who is running for governor of Wisconsin.

Trivedi said Monday that he is an independent candidate for governor. He said he spent $17,000 to run a series of ads about his candidacy. One of the ads ran before the Super Bowl; another ran after the game.

Trivedi is a kidney specialist who lives with his wife and three sons in Brookfield. He was a write-in candidate for governor in 2010.

Why is he running in what will likely be a recall election involving Gov. Scott Walker?

"I am, like most Americans, disillusioned by the current status. It's almost appalling. I decided I should do something besides talk and complain," he said.

Spartans lose to Hale, lose chance to end losing streak

Feb. 02, 2012 9:24 p.m. | West Allis Hale nipped Brookfield East, 42-40, Thursday night at East and kept the Spartans winless in the Greater Metro Conference.

The Huskies are now 2-8 in the GMC, while East dropped to 0-10. With Brookfield Central (5-4), Divine Savior Holy Angels (8-1), West Allis Central (5-4) and Menomonee Falls (7-2) on the Spartans' schedule the rest of the way, the chance getting into the win column in league play is not good.

East led 16-13 after the first period, as Christy Johnson nailed three 3-pointers.  East extended that lead to 25-18 when Hale's Rachel Seefeldt threw in a half-court shot to make it 25-21 at halftime.

But the Huskies came out and went on an 11-0 run to take a 32-25 lead with 3:12 left in the quarter. Jazzmin King banked in a 3-point shot from the top of the key to open the scoring in the second half.

Then when Erin Barbeau, standing behind the backboard on the right side, threw a shot over the top of the backboard and into the net, the Huskies were off and running.

The win left Central at 5-3 (8-6 overall) one game behind Falls (6-2, 13-3) and Sussex Hamilton (6-2, 10-2) and two games behind first-place Divine Savior Holy Angels (7-1, 10-3) with the Dashers coming to Central on Tuesday.

Town of Waukesha to appeal incorporation ruling

Jan. 22, 2012 8:05 p.m. | Town of Waukesha - The Town Board will appeal a circuit judge's ruling this month that advances an effort by the Town of Brookfield to incorporate much of its territory along with a portion of the Town of Waukesha.

In resolutions adopted after a closed meeting last week, the board restated its opposition to the incorporation and authorized town attorney Hector de la Mora and a second lawyer, Dean P. Laing, to pursue the appeal.

Waukesha County Circuit Judge Donald J. Hassin Jr. ruled Jan. 12 that the Town of Brookfield's petition to incorporate about 4.2 square miles as a village met state procedural requirements and could therefore be sent to the state for review.

In doing so, the judge rejected motions filed by the Town and City of Waukesha to dismiss the incorporation petition. The City of Brookfield, which has stated its willingness to annex the Town of Brookfield land to be incorporated, and the Village of Sussex also joined the objectors.

With the court's blessing, the Town of Brookfield and town resident Jay Walt, who began the incorporation petition drive, can now file its petition and supporting documentation, along with a $25,000 fee, with the state. Typically the Incorporation Review Board holds a public hearing before ruling in favor or against the incorporation.

Elmbrook student in Korean hospital after brain injury while skiing

Jan. 18, 2012 3:29 p.m. | An Elmbrook School District eighth-grader is in a hospital in Seoul, South Korea, after suffering a severe brain injury in a skiing accident while on vacation in that country.

When Kerwin Hackett's family was last heard from last week, he was still unconscious after the Dec. 30 incident.

Mike Sereno, principal of Pilgrim Park Middle School, said Kerwin was visiting family over the holiday break when the accident occurred. His parents are Brookfield residents Nathan Hackett and Unkyoung Yang, whose family they were visiting.

Sereno didn't have much detail about the accident, but said Kerwin was wearing a helmet when it happened. In a communication last week with members of the school community, Sereno wrote that though Kerwin was still unconscious, he was showing signs of progress, had good reflexes and opened his eyes a lot, among other hopeful signs.

Sereno said he's been keeping the school informed and made a point to tell Kerwin's closer friends about it first.

The Brookfield Common Council gave the final approval for the endeavor tonight.

Pet Supplies Plus, which carries an array of toys, food and equipment for dogs, cats, fish, birds and reptiles, already has several locations in the metro area, including a store on Bluemound Road.

Some interior renovations will be made to make the building suitable for the store's use, but no exterior alterations are planned, Goudy said.
