The basics: Your guide to getting around town

It doesn't matter whether you just moved into Brookfield or whether you're a lifetime resident, here's your guide to just about everything you need to know about living in the city.

How do I change the address on my driver's license?

You can do this over the phone, through the mail or in person at the nearest state Department of Motor Vehicle location. The nearest DMV office is located at 400 S. West Ave. in Waukesha. If you'd rather do it via the mail or phone, you can get the details at the DMV's web site.

How do I change my address with the Postal Service?

You can do this in person at the Brookfield Post Office, 17345 Civic Drive, or you can do it online at the Postal Service's web site.

How do I register children for school?

To begin the enrollment process in the Elmbrook School District, the student's parent/guardian must first go to the nearest school and have their address verified through either a driver's license or a piece of mail such as a utility bill to ensure the student is enrolling at the correct school. Once it is verified, the parent/guardian is invited for a tour of the school, which the student can also attend. Following the tour, enrollment forms are filled out and a start date is chosen. If you have questions about school registration, call 262-781-3030 or visit the Elmbrook School District's web site for more information.

When is the trash picked up?

Trash is collected once a week according to a schedule established by the Superior/Onyx, the contracted residential waste hauler for the city. Trash and recyclables are collected on the same day. Items for collection must be placed outside, ready for pick up by 7 a.m. on the designated service day. This map will show you what your pickup day is. Questions? Call the Superior/Onyx at (262) 367-6040. Brookfield also has a mandatory recycling program. Click here for details on recycling.

Where is City Hall? What are the hours?

City Hall is located at 2000 N. Calhoun Road. It's open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Who are my local elected officials? How can I reach them?

Brookfield is governed under a Mayor/Council format, with the mayor elected for a four-year term. The mayor serves as the chief executive and chief administrative officer for the city. The Common Council consists of 14 aldermen, with two elected from each of seven districts. The current mayor is Steven Ponto. Click here for phone numbers and email addresses for all city officials. Here's a map of aldermanic districts to find out who your alderman is.

Where is the local library? What are the library hours?

The Brookfield Public Library is located at 1900 N. Calhoun Road. The library is open seven days a week in the fall, winter and spring, but is closed Sundays in the summer. Click here for complete library hours or call (262) 782-4140 and press 5.

How do I register to vote? Where do I vote?

You can register to vote at City Hall prior to election day, or you can register at the polling place on the day of the election, provided you have proper identification. Click here for details on how to register or call the City Clerk's office at (262) 796-6653. Click here to find out where to vote on Election Day.

Where can I learn more about merchants and shopping in Brookfield?

The Brookfield area has hundreds of fine businesses that offer a large variety of goods and services. The Brookfield Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Greater Brookfield Chamber of Commerce can provide you with more information about local businesses.
