Mark your calendar - Saturday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m. at Arrowhead High School. It's the WIAA Sectional #7 soccer championship match, the winner heading to Uihlein Soccer Park for the state tournament.
Sectional # 7, as usual, is one of the strongest ones in Wisconsin. Brookfield East is the state's top-ranked team, Brookfield Central is fifth-ranked and Germantown is eighth-ranked. So it's no surprise that they are the top three seeds in the sectional.
The Spartans should beat 9th-seeded Sussex Hamilton Thursday night to advance to the sectional next week. The banged-up, but gutsy Lancers should handle Arrowhead, who they just beat last week. However, don't tell Wauwatosa East that. The Red Raiders handily whipped the Chargers last week, only to be handled in return Tuesday night in a 2-0 loss.
Germantown has the toughest match, hosting 6th-seeded Tosa West, the Woodland Conference co-champs. The Trojans beat the Warhawks, 2-1, in the first week of the season.
Coach Ryan Bailey has pointed out that his team needs to keep playing like they have the last two weeks as the battled for a share of the WC crown, knowing one mis-step and it was over. They played well in dispatching 11th-seeded Grafton Tuesday night.
Like most people I'm looking for an All-Brookfield finale. There will be plenty of talent and emotion on the field and I wouldn't want to miss it.
