Some random thoughts ...
This is a down time for high school sports in Brookfield and Wauwatosa, as we take a deep breath before getting ready to cover 45 fall teams. Each of the schools I cover in Brookfield, Tosa and Shorewood have nine sports for the five schools. It is the most difficult time of the year for our staff and we couldn't get through it without the cooperation of the coaches and their staffs, since one reporter couldn't possibly cover 45 teams without help.

Library happenings in August
Summer is almost over. Children will be going back to school shortly. Check out the library’s book display on the firs floor on preparing your child for school.In honor of the Harley Davidson 105th anniversary, we have prepared a book display of books on Harley Davidson. Very interesting reading!
Congratulations to the 515 children who participated in the 2008 summer reading program. Miss Denise will post the top readers from each school in the Youth Room.
The fall story time will start on Tuesday, September 2. Story time will be at 10:30 pm. You may start to register children on Monday, August 18 either in person or call 768-8195, ext 3.
We will be having a special program featuring the Mad Science group on Wednesday afternoon, September 17 from 4-5 pm. Kids will learn how to make polymers. Registration is required since the class is limited to 30. People who register and do not show up, unless they call and cancel, will be assed a $2.00 fee.
Color copies are only 50 cents. Our copier makes great copies of photographs. We are looking for presenters for our fall adult programs. Have a hobby that you would like to share with us, call the Library Director at 768-8195.

They just like to walk.
Last night, I spent a little time looking through archives of old
pictures I've taken. I do this maybe once or twice a year — for me,
it's a good way to keep myself in check and see firsthand ways I can
improve. But every time I do this, memories come rushing back.
I'm not the type of photographer to hang my own photos on my
walls or clutter my apartment with picture frames. My professional
archives are in binders underneath my couch and my personal archives
are in dusty photo albums packed away in my closet. But with every
photo is a memory — whether the photo is of a complete stranger or
someone I love, my archives document my life, whether I'd like to
remember those moments or not. With each photo, I remember how I felt
the moment the camera clicked.
School Immunization Updates
As much as we would like to deny it, the end of summer is fast approaching and that means school will soon be starting. We want to remind you to include a review of your child's immunization record in your preparation for school. There have been some changes in the Wisconsin immunization requirements for the coming school year and your child may need some booster shots.
The first change is that a second dose of varicella vaccine for chicken pox is now required for five year old kindergarten, sixth grade, and twelfth grade. As children in the other grades move on, they, too, will be required to have the second dose. This change resulted from "breakthrough" cases of chicken pox that have occurred after immunization. A similar situation occurred with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) immunization in the past and now two MMR doses are required by the time a child enters kindergarten. Of course, if your child has ever had chicken pox disease, no vaccination is needed because there is natural immunity.

Whatever Happened To The Police Auction?
I have received some questions as to when the Wauwatosa Police Department is holding the next auction; the answer is right now. But wait, don't come running over to the department because we have gone high tech! Instead of holding an annual auction, recovered property can be bid on at www.propertyroom.com just like on Ebay. For the past couple years the department has been using propertyroom.com as a clearing house for unclaimed recovered property.
Here is how it works, after an exhaustive effort of trying to locate the lawful owner for a piece of recovered property it is shipped to propertyroom.com who in turn lists it on their website for bidding. The winning bidder pays shipping and handling and the price received for the item is split 50/50 between propertyroom.com and the City. The funds returned to the City are then placed in the general fund.

I found my Opie.
His name is Gregory Palo, but you might want to put an "M" before Palo, because his dad's name is Gregory too, he says.
"This is about good enough for a good snack ... so, that's my catch for today," Gregory said matter-of-factly Tuesday afternoon as he slung three fish over his shoulder and walked away from his lucky fishing spot at Idle Isle Park, Muskego. Gregory's parents told him to either walk home or call as soon as he caught enough fish for a snack.
The Olympics: One world, many questions. What to be concerned about and what we can do better
After the amazingly dramatic Beijing Olympics, the one of Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, Shawn Johnson and the wonderful polyglot, record-setting number of nations and cultures that won medals (87), it's time to take stock and reflect on the cultural and political impact of these astonishing games.
Plus maybe discuss a little sports too.
Head Lice
This is the time of year that we get a fair number of calls about head lice (formally known as pediculosis). Head lice are parasitic insects that are found worldwide. Anyone can become infested with head lice but in the U.S., infestations are most common among preschool children attending day care, elementary school children, and the household members of infested children. Infestation of head lice is NOT related to standards of personal hygiene. Head lice are more or less a nuisance and are not known to spread disease.
Head lice live close to the human scalp and feed on blood several times a day. They move by crawling (they do not hop or fly) and are easily spread from person to person by direct contact. Although not very common, head lice can also be spread by indirect contact with lice carrying objects such as combs, brushes, hats, or scarves.
NBC's coverage of the Olympics was astonishing, but not perfect
Give NBC credit for its comprehensive coverage of the Beijing Olympics.
It used an array of satellite networks (Anyone for soccer on Telemundo? Cycling on MSNBC?), an army of technicians and almost everyone who's ever held a microphone in their hand and stood in front of a camera to cover the events as well as they could.

The high school football season officially kicks off Thursday night and in the Brookfield-Wauwatosa area that means Wauwatosa East does the honors, hosting Milwaukee Riverside.
As usual, the Red Raiders have to stay healthy to be effective as coach Tom Swittel has some outstanding skill players to rely on. Quarterback Ethan Harris and wide receiver Barret Powell, one of the best athletes in the area, should make an exciting combination this year. And Tyler Love and Mike Cupertino give Harris someone to hand off to.

A letter to Usain Bolt
This last Olympic blog of mine was going to focus largely on the inadequacies of the US track team (What, is the 400 meter length the only thing anyone can do correctly over here?) in comparison to the brilliance of the swim and even the fencing and target shooting squads (Davy Crockett would be jealous of the latter!), but the veteran, jaundice-eyed reporter in me called out to do something more important, more urgent than that.
I wanted to send an open letter to the world's fastest human: Usain Bolt of Jamaica.
