Library happenings in June
My how time flies. Summer is almost here. Time to start getting the yard in shape and planning those family picnics. Check out the library’s collection of gardening and cook books.“Catch the Reading Bug” is the theme for the 2008 reading program. Be sure to pick up a brochure at the library that lists all of the fun things kids can do this summer. The program begins on Monday June 16 and runs through Saturday, July 26th. There is also a listing of the programs on the library’s calendar of events on the website, www.southmilwaukee.org/library.
The summer hours of the library begin on Monday, June 16. The hours will remain the same as in the winter except that the Youth Room will close at noon on Saturdays. The Library will be closed on Friday, July 4th and will reopen on Saturday, July 5.
The Youth Room is looking for volunteers to help with the reading program. If you are interested in volunteering you should call Miss Denise at 768-8195 ext 3.
Reading a good book and would like to share a review. E-mail your review to bob.pfeiffer@mcfls.org and we will post it on the blog.
Interested in joining a book discussion group? Stop in the second Thursday of each month at 1 pm for a stimulating book discussion. Check with the adult reference desk to see what book they are reading that month.
Mosquitoes and West Nile Virus
Summer is almost here and outside activities beckon. And the mosquitoes are just waiting for us! Should we be concerned?
West Nile infection is caused by the West Nile virus and is spread to people by the bite of a mosquito infected with the virus. The mosquito becomes infected by feeding on an infected bird. The West Nile virus was first detected in the U.S. in 1999 and has since spread across the country. The first human infections in Wisconsin were documented in 2002.

Flood Cleanup
The severe weather over the weekend has created havoc for many families as they deal with the aftermath. If you have been affected by a flooded basement or sewage backup, there are safety precautions you can take to reduce your risk of infection while cleaning up.
-
Avoid contact with contaminated surfaces by wearing rubber boots, rubber gloves, and eye protection.
-
Make sure your tetanus immunization is current -- within the past ten years.
-
Clean all hard surfaces with hot water and laundry or dish detergent then disinfect with a solution of one cup chlorine bleach in five gallons of water.
-
Discard items that cannot be washed and disinfected (for example, mattresses, carpeting, rugs, upholstered furniture, toys, stuffed animals, etc.)
-
Remove and discard drywall and insulation that has been contaminated.
-
Help the drying process by using fans, air conditioning, and dehumidifiers to prevent mold.
-
Allow the home to dry completely before installing new materials.
-
Wash hands thoroughly after cleanup.
-
Contaminated clothes should be washed in hot water and detergent.
-
Keep children and pets away from the affected area.

Summer Library Reading Clubs Begin June 16
The Summer “Catch the Reading Bug” Reading Club will begin on Monday, June 16th. Children may register any time during regular library hours beginning on June 16th. Children of any age may join the club and record titles read to them, titles they read on their own or time spent reading. Receive prize coupons after first 10 titles or three hours and 20 minutes of reading. Enter drawing for more prizes after each additional 10 titles or three hours and 20 minutes of reading. All reading must be completed and reported by 5 p.m. on August 22nd to be eligible for the prize drawing.
Burglaries
Recently there has been some burglaries in various areas around the City and many of them could have been avoided if some simple practices were put into place. Please take the time to review the bullet points listed below and try to employ them around your home, it should reduce the chances of you becoming the victim of a burglary.

Never leave an unattended garage or garden shed unlocked or with the doors open.
-
Never allow a stranger into your home.
-
Never leave your doors or windows open if you cannot physically monitor them. Unmonitored doors should be closed and locked, windows should be closed so that they are open no more than 4" and they are pinned so that they cannot be opened any wider.
-
Light the entire exterior of your home during hours of darkness.
-
Always roll up vehicle windows and lock the vehicle, even if you are away from it for a short period of time.
-
All bikes should be locked in a garage or to an immobile object when not actually being ridden.
The "Bad Guys" rely on three things - Ability, Desire and Opportunity. The one thing we can take away from the "Bad Guy" is his or her OPPORTUNITY!

NOW On-line editor Mark Maley asked me a while back to write some blogs on the local professional teams. Having worked in the Milwaukee sports media - in public relations for the Brewers for 19 years, as well as a radio talk show host and with CNI the last six years - I thought it was a great idea. People who know me, know I always have an opinion about something.
Since things have finally slowed down, I hope to do more of that with only summer baseball and the Wauwatosa Spartans football team on the schedule for the next few months.

This blog helps keep the community involved in the day to day goings on at Elmbrook Humane Society, your local animal shelter. We have some happy stories, some sad stories, but we always have animal stories to share. We hope all animal lovers will enjoy being a part of world!
Today was a rather exciting day for a few of our animals. Three of our cats, and one of our dogs were asked to participate in a photo shoot for Abbott Labs Animal Health Division. O'Malley, Atticus, Ginger and Larry were photographed at the Saturn Lounge Photography Studio, and all of them did very well. They all seem to know that they are stars now!
After the Water -- Mold
If you were unlucky and had a basement full of water during the recent heavy storms, you may have an ideal habitat for mold to grow. Mold needs water to survive and begins to grow when spores land on a wet or damp surface. While molds are part of the natural environment and are everywhere, they have the potential to cause health problems such as an allergic reaction or aggravation of asthma symptoms when they begin to grow indoors. So if your basement was flooded, it is very important to dry it out as fast as possible and monitor for mold growth.
To reduce the opportunity for mold growth, you can:
-
Completely dry affected areas but do not rely on evaporation alone. Use a dehumidifier and provide good air circulation for fast, adequate drying.
-
Carpets, furniture, drywall, and anything absorbent that got wet should be discarded. (Hopefully these first two steps have already been completed.)
-
Make sure the moisture problem is eliminated and repair any cracks in the basement walls.
-
Regularly clean and empty the drip pans in the dehumidifier.
-
Be sure your home has adequate ventilation.
-
Clean hard surfaces with detergent and water to prevent mold. Bleach is used for mold removal.
Milez to go....HOME!!!
Milez went home today! Many of you are already familiar with the plight of Milez. He is a 5 year old Husky that was recently surrendered to the shelter when his owners could no longer afford to pay for his seizure medications (about $50 a month). On top of everything else, poor Milez is about 30 pounds overweight.
Fortunately, a super lady came in today and fell in love with this beautiful dog. She is committed to maintaining his medications, and exercising him, and we know that he has found the perfect forever home. A few tears of happiness were shed when he left today. Shelter animals already have so many things stacked against them, and to have a medical condition, with a weight problem would definitely be a hindrance to most adopters. We love people that can love an animal the way our animals love us - with all of our faults, problems, and bad habits. There are no perfect people, and no perfect animals, but there sure are many people and animals that are perfect for each other! Here are photos of Milez, and Milez and his new mom!
Rodriguez faces another challenge
Dax Rodriguez helped reverse the fortunes of the West Allis Central softball program this year, and when school resumes in August, he will attempt another turnaround.
Rodriguez is the new head football coach of the Bulldogs and will try to bring them back from a disappointing 1-9 season, just as he took the softball team from a losing mark in 2007 to 15-5 in the season just completed.

Local high school baseball starting to shape up
The local high school baseball teams are starting to get an idea on what kind of season is on the horizon for them with June coming to a close and July just around the corner.
After a slow start - for them - the Brookfield Central Lancers are starting to come around. Central recently had an 11-game winning streak stopped and brought a 7-4 Greater Metro Conference record and a 14-7 overall mark into this week's action.

start with the graduations. I had five of them to shoot this month.
When
you photograph the same event five times within three weeks, you really
start to work. This year, I struggled a bit. Hundreds of graduation
photos taken by other news photographers kept flashing through my mind.
"Look for something different. Avoid the typical
getting-ready-in-the-bathroom-mirror shot." As close-knit as
photographers are, we NEVER want to get the same photo. It's like, The
Battle of the Photographer Ego, Times 100.
