Established in 1965, HAWS assists over 6,000 animals and welcomes more than 31,000 human visitors annually. As an "open admissions" shelter we lead the community in animal welfare and assure sanctuary for all animals in need, regardless of age, health or temperament. HAWS is a non-profit, entirely donor-fund organization with an active humane education program, and both wildlife and companion animal rescue services for Waukesha County.

HAWS has recently been the proud and grateful beneficiary of several amazing community-based donations, all in support of the “HAWS Cause!”
Zeus & Company, a pet food distributor, donated several pallets of product to HAWS – about 4,000 pounds! Todd Oilschlager, a Zeus representative, noted the food and treats are valued at more than $5,800. Many thanks to Todd, a HAWS business partner and the man who brought Zeus and HAWS together, and Zeus & Company owner, David Levy, for their generosity. The full tummies of HAWS’ residents are also very thankful!
Girl Scout Troop 4294 in Waukesha completed work on the Memorial Garden at HAWS, with help from their parents and the following local businesses: 3-D Greenhouse, AAA Asphalt, Anchor Bank, Eagle Media, Halquist Stone, Home Depot-Waukesha, Phil Kelber/Mason & Chimney Specialists, Lang Landscape, Christopher Lee’s Concrete Creations, Mavroff Mulch, Piala’s, Prospect Hill Nursery, Rozman True Value, Shady Acres Nursery and Trees on the Move. This reflective garden is dedicated to all beloved animals.
First Weber – Lake Country held their 3rd annual Take Your Dogs To Work Day in June, raising $3,200! First Weber employees, their best canine friends and many other visitors enjoyed lunch and each other’s company. HAWS’ Mobile Adoption Center truly felt “Home Sweet Home” with the realtors and their staff.
By the way - 2 more September events also showcase HAWS and our community partners:
· Waukesha favorite, Casa del Rio, will ‘party for the pets’ at the Fall Fiesta on Friday, Sept. 14 and Saturday, Sept. 15. An 80’s Disco Party, Zumba, live music by The Lonely Hearts and Los Guys, food/drink specials and more benefit HAWS.
· Don’t commit a “faux paws” by missing this fundraiser! Romp the Runwayis Friday, Sept. 28 from 5:30-8:30pm. Cocktails, appetizers, a spectacular runway show featuring styles from Boutique B’Lou, Faye’s, Georgie and Next Door are included in the $75/person admission; V.I.P. tables and sponsorships are available: 262-542-8851.
As one of the few shelters with a dedicated Small Animal Ward, at HAWS we always have plenty of small and furry friends up for adoption. Here are 2 of our favorite buns!
My name is Silky and I am a very elegant gentlebun (check out my video – the HAWS volunteers have clicker-trained me!). My white coat shaded with silver glistens in the light, which may be why my breed is called “Satin.” I was someone’s Easter gift that they grew tired of...can you believe that?! I am very curious and friendly…and a bit hyper-active because I don’t like to sit still. A large cage and several hours a day outside of it to have my bunny adventures is a must! And here’s a bonus: I use a litter box!
Don’t forget me, Jaxon! I am a handsome young fellow as you can see but I am also very large – I’m what is known as a “Checkered Giant” and weigh about 11 pounds. I was brought into HAWS after being found wandering around lost, but I am super-friendly. I can be easily excited and like activity, so I’ll need a large space to live in...actually, the perfect home for me would be an exercise pen like this. I will need to be out of my cage everyday to scamper about and explore, and I’ll really enjoy hanging out with my new family. I do love a good head rub and will lay my head on your lap for you to do so. My litter box training is going really well, too!
To learn about caring for house rabbits, log onto www.rabbit.org, and for great rabbit cage ideas check out THIS neat site. All rabbit adoptions at HAWS include a free copy of the "House Rabbit Handbook: How To Live With An Urban Rabbit." Wear your bunny pride on your sleeve: purchase one of HAWS’ special edition Year of the Rabbit t-shirts (both short and long-sleeved varieties are available).
By the way - have you reserved your spot on the Runway yet? It would be a total FAUX PAWS to miss HAWS' Romp the Runway fundraiser on September 28th...
HAWS reminds everyone of our very “fashionable” fundraiser, Romp the Runway!
All proceeds of this fundraiser benefit the life-saving work done by the Waukesha pet resource center. This work done by HAWS includes the Spay-Neuter Initiative Program clinic and it’s Project Guardian, actively and aggressively combating the cat overpopulation problem that still exists in Waukesha County. Also being helped by the event are HAWS’ Behavior Department and Mod Squad™, who work with the dogs that are turned away by others and have nowhere left to turn! The employees and volunteers rehabilitate these pets to make them wonderful adoption candidates, to great success. But all these efforts come at a price, and HAWS needs our community’s support to continue these important programs.
On Friday, September 28th, from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m., guests will flock like paparazzi to Romp the Runway at Silver Spring Banquet Center, N56 W21318 Silver Spring Dr. Cocktails, wine and appetizers will be served while attendees take in a runway fashion show featuring clothing from local shoppes Boutique B’Lou, Faye’s, Georgie Consignment and Next Door. Along with the runway show the event will include an auction, raffle, goody bags for each guest and a meet’n’greet with HAWS adoptable pets.
Admission is $75 per person; advance tickets can be purchased at HAWS, online at www.hawspets.org, by calling 262-542-8851, and at the event itself. Sponsorships and VIP reserved tables are also available; contact Jessica at HAWS at 262-542-8851, x112.
Each year, hundreds of area residents attend HAWS’ fall fundraiser to give all-important support the shelter while having fun, too. Don’t commit a “faux paws”: Be sure to attend HAWS’ Romp the Runway on September 28th!
By the way:
HAWS doesn't just assure sanctuary for cats and dogs! Our small animal ward provides housing for a myriad of creatures - furry, feathered, fabulous all!
Twilight is a green iguana, currently measuring about 20" from end of snout to end of tail. That makes Twilight approximately 1 year old...and means lots of growing still to do to reach "maturity" which is 5-6 feet in length.
An Iguana's housing will have to be changed in size throughout their lifetime to accomodate their growth. They also have very specific dietary requirements as well as heat and light requirements.
A visit a reptile vet regularly is a must to maintain good health!
Iguana's are a long-term commitment: before adopting, do your research and learn all about Iguana care. (Iguana's are still the #1 "dumped" reptile in the US!) As a special gift, when you adopt Twilight at HAWS you will receive a copy of "Iguanas For Dummies" by Melissa Kaplan!
