Established in 1965, HAWS assists over 6,000 animals and welcomes more than 31,000 human visitors annually. As an "open admissions" shelter we lead the community in animal welfare and assure sanctuary for all animals in need, regardless of age, health or temperament. HAWS is a non-profit, entirely donor-fund organization with an active humane education program, and both wildlife and companion animal rescue services for Waukesha County.

On Thursday, August 16, at 6:30pm, don't miss the opportunity to join Patricia McConnell at HAWS for an evening talk on Canine Play! Play! Play!
Play is fun, but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s just goofy or frivolous! Play is powerful stuff, and it has a profound influence on your relationship with your dog. Learn how play can enhance your relationship with your dog, improve your dog’s responsiveness and provide your dog with the mental and physical exercise they need. We’ll talk about up-to-date research on how to tell your dog you want to play (most of us aren’t very good at it!), some charming tricks and games to wow your friends, and most importantly, how NOT to play with your dog. If you'd like a happier, more responsive dog and a closer relationship with each other, then this talk is for you.
The registration fee is $40.00. Pre-registration is required and is available online or by contacting Khris Erickson, HAWS' Humane Educator, at 262-542-8851, x118.
Patricia McConnell, PhD, a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, (CAAB) has made a lifelong commitment to improving the relationship between people and animals. By the way - If you haven't already, check out HAWS' awesome August happenings! An "Essential Oils" seminar is on the 17th, our Pet Fair and Ride for Rover "merge" on the 18th, Puppy Parties happen every Sunday evening...and our Mobile Adoption Center is all over, bringing happy tails to you!
HAWS is "merging" 2 fun events for 1 great time this Saturday!
A FREE event, HAWS’ Pet Fair in Menomonee Falls runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on August 18th at Rotary Park (Fond du Lac Ave. west of Lilly Rd.). This event features all things for the pet and pet lover, with more than 50 vendors and information booths, great food, prizes and activities. Special guest Marilynn Mee of Classic Hits WKLH will host the adoptables parade, showcasing pets looking for their new fur-ever homes! Nancy G. Photography will be on hand for pet portraits, and owners receive a free 5x7 print of their pet with a donated item from HAWS’ Wish List. Pets are welcome to attend with their owners, but must be kept on a 6’ lead or in a kennel/carrier. (Owners are responsible for clean-up after their pets; attendees are invited to take the Paws Pledge for Cleaner Water.)
Making August 18th even more exciting for HAWS, the third annual Ride for Rover motorcycle rally will also be rumbling through the area that day! The Ride starts at Hal’s Harley-Davidson at 9:00 a.m. and ends at the Pet Fair with a party featuring live music by Daisy Chain. This ride is open not just to motorcycle enthusiasts but to anyone who would like to support HAWS and partners Friends of M.A.D.A.C.C./B.A.D. Register at the event website, www.rideforrover.com, or at www.hawspets.org; the fee of $20/driver and $10/additional rider include the official Ride for Rover t-shirt and a goody bag. Visit all the Ride Stops (including Petlicious Dog Bakery & Pet Spa, Friends of Nature – Genesee and Central Bark – Sussex) and complete a “Ride Game Board” while on the road to win a flat screen TV, a party at Casa del Rio, bar tabs at other local favorite spots and more.
We hope you'll join us!
This special boy is just one of the many awesome pets available for adoption at HAWS!
Meet Charlie, a 7-years-young Pit Bull. He hasn't been hanging out with us at HAWS for too long...but we didn't need much time at all to fall in love with him. And pamper him (as evidenced by these pictures)!
Charlie is a well-mannered dog by ANY standards, and would work well in many households. He's lovable and loving.
"Just look at my face!!! I am Charlie and if you are looking for the 'perfect pit'...I am it! Somehow I managed to wind up here at HAWS. Don't get me wrong, it's GREAT here, but I am a family dog and deserve the best family ever. Please read up on my breed and remember lots of people don't get that Pits can be sweet and calm....and that's totally me! I am good with cats and other dogs and kids are fine, but not ones that are too small. (I am strong and can knock the little ones over.) Stop in and see me - I am just the BEST!
HAWS is open 7 days a week for viewing and adoption - what are you waiting for?!?!
By the way - reserve your spot on the runway today! HAWS fashionable fundraiser, Romp the Runway, is Friday, September 28, from 5:30-8:30pm at Silver Spring Country Club. If you've ever thought of adopting 4 little paws from HAWS, now is the time: We have a plethora of piggies, a bunch of bunnies, a ridiculous number rodents!
Many of our little pets come with "owner's manuals" (really!) and often they also are sent home with the housing unit they are residing in here at HAWS. All you need to provide is care and love - and they'll give you that and so much more in return.
(Pictured are Daryl, Eeyore and Ben, Felix, Gloria and Charlotte, Flash, Joe, Princeton, and Mutt and Jeff. Information on all of them can be found at our online Pet Showcase.)
