Established in 1965, HAWS assists over 6,000 animals and welcomes more than 31,000 human visitors annually. As an "open admissions" shelter we lead the community in animal welfare and assure sanctuary for all animals in need, regardless of age, health or temperament. HAWS is a non-profit, entirely donor-fund organization with an active humane education program, and both wildlife and companion animal rescue services for Waukesha County.

By the way - a few seasonal reminders for pet owners: As of January 1st, all dogs and many cats are required by law to have an updated license. Each municipality is different – owners should check with their city/town/village for details. Keep pets safely indoors when the temperature dips, other than for short walks and potty breaks. Clean salt off sensitive paw pads, check ears for frostbite, and have your short-coated dog wear a coat or sweater when outdoors. Store poisonous antifreeze out of reach, and, if your vehicle is outdoors, be sure to bang the hood to scare away any hidden animals before starting your engine.
Twice each month at HAWS we host the team from Emergency Medical Services and their First Aid for Pets class. The first class for 2012 is coming up this Saturday, at HAWS, at 1:00 p.m. The class lasts about 3 hours and is a great resource for any pet owner.
Topics covered in the hands-on class include how to control bleeding, correct actions to take for poison ingestion, performing pet CPR, alleviating choking, treating burns, handling seizures and much more. A complete 126-page first aid manual is available.
EMS handles registration: Contact them at 262-879-0165 for more details, too.
Can't make it this Saturday? Check our Upcoming Events calendar on our website for all the 2012 class dates. The alternative class this month is January 28th.
By the way - HAWS sells First Aid kits for pets also at our shelter! We've partnered with Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center/Emergency Vet Service here in Waukesha to make these kits available. Each kit contains all the basic care essentials and costs $15. They are available in the merchandise section of our lobby. Purchase one for home and the car to always be ready to help your pet!
This coming Saturday is "Nosh & Mush" day at HAWS: We're hosting an event for Waukesha Janboree called "Cool Your Paws at HAWS!"
“HAWS is thrilled to join Waukesha Janboree in 2012!” says HAWS Executive Director Lynn Olenik. “We are proud to invite pets and their people to ‘Cool Your Paws at HAWS’ on Saturday, January 21 from 11:00am to 3:00pm.” HAWS is located at 701 Northview Road, Waukesha.
Activities will include a Shelter Scavenger Hunt for kids and pet games like Hotdog Bobbing and the Peanut Butter Lick-Off. Guests can enjoy treats for the whole family (check out the doggie treat bake sale), view adoptable pets, meet HAWS’ mascot Lucky and enter the raffles to win a flat screen TV or pet-themed goody baskets. Pets joining in the fun should be secured in a carrier or on a leash for safety.
Highlighting “Cool Your Paws at HAWS” are 2 very special events. First, at 11:30am, learn “K9 Cuisine with Dr. Claudeen” – a pet cooking class/demonstration. Make Lab Lasagna or a Poodle Parfait for your best friend, and take home the leftovers! Pre-registration is requested, so please call 262-542-8851 or log onto hawspets.org for details. Participants are asked to donate $5 each to defray the cost of food.
Then, from noon until approximately 2:30pm, Olenik and her sled dog team will be giving Dog Sled Rides! Weather permitting, rides will be given at 10-minute intervals, and guests can begin signing up at HAWS’ front counter at 11:30am. Rides will be on a 1st come/1st served basis, with a fee of $5 per run. All proceeds benefit HAWS’ animal care and adoption programs.
“Come out to HAWS and celebrate the fun of the season with your best friends – pets and people,” invites Olenik. “We’d love to see you at the shelter!”

Keep an eye out for HAWS special goings-on...including the opportunity to SPONSOR-A-SPAY and purchase your very own limited edition Spay Day t-shirt. (Proceeds from HAWS' events support SNIP, our Spay-Neuter Initiative Program and clinic!)
World Spay Day is Tuesday, February 28 - one month from today. HAWS is getting involved in a big way!
We are asking YOU to help us save countless lives through our spay-neuter program (SNIP) efforts. We KNOW spay-neuter works - we've seen an almost 20% reduction in the number of stray kittens/cats coming into our shelter since 2005. A few more years of concentrated efforts - in particular with outdoor/barn cats - and we'll be close to seeing and end to pet overpopulation!
How can YOU get involved?
A donation as little as $30 can neuter a cat, $75 can spay a dog. Amounts above that can help us provide spay/neuter procedures to those in need, including our own shelter pets, local rescue groups, low income households, those with outdoor/barn cat groups and more. Any and every donation can make a difference, so click on over to our SNIP webpage and donate today!
Buy a T-shirt
HAWS is selling limited edition World Spay Day 2012 t-shirts. Your purchase of one of these t's not only supports our spay-neuter efforts, it also proclaims loudly to all who see your shirt the importance of spaying and neutering our companion animals. They're a beautiful blue and only $15..while they last!
Enter the Pet Photo Contest
HSUS, the parent organization of World Spay Day, is holding an online pet photo contest - when you enter your pet you can select HAWS as your charity of choice, and then all the votes your pet receives in the contest mean a donation to HAWS! You can win some amazing prizes, too...so show off your best friend and help the HAWS cause at the same time.
By the way - in association with World Spay Day, HAWS is providing free spay-neuter surgeries to target groups - those with cats, kittens, Pitbulls and Pit mixes. Do you need spay-neuter assistance foryour pets or outdoor/barn cat populations? Contact HAWS' SNIP clinic for information on available programs at 262-542-8851, x109.
