The Elmbrook Education Foundation supports the students at all 11 of the District's public schools through its Continuing Education Scholarship, Innovation Grant and Super Grant Programs. In addition, the Foundation has established an endowment held by the Waukesha County Community Foundation to provide a source of permanent support for Foundation programs. For more information, please refer to the Foundation's web site.
The Elmbrook Education Foundation is a 501c3 organization that supports the students and schools of the Elmbrook School District by providing private financial support through the Foundation’s Educational Grant Programs. The Foundation also administers a community wide Continuing Education Scholarship program that matches scholarship donors to applicants that best meet the donor’s criteria. The Elmbrook Education Foundation’s permanent endowment includes honorary/memorial funds and funds supported by EEF Board members, Elmbrook staff, community members, and the alumni of Brookfield Central and Brookfield East High Schools.
The Foundation has a volunteer board of directors including 12 community members with guidance provided by Elmbrook administrators and community advisors. The Foundation’s new fiscal year began on July 1, 2010. The following changes have been made to the Foundation’s board of directors.
David Frank of Brookfield is currently serving a 3 year term (2008-2011) and has been elected President for the 2010-11 year. David is an attorney at Reinhart Law in Brookfield. He served as a chair of the Grants committee in 2008-2010.
Philip J. Miller, Amy Hodges, and Shelley Botchek (all of Brookfield) were elected to the board of directors for a 3 year term (2010-2013). Philip is an attorney and partner of Weiss Berzowski Brady LLP. He is a former member of the adjunct faculty at Marquette University Law School and frequently speaks at continuing legal education programs. Philip will act as the Foundation's legal counsel and sit on the Foundation's Finance Committee for the 2010-11 year. Shelley is currently President of the Burleigh Elementary PTO and the chair of the District's Enrollment Management Study Team. She has also served on the District's Elementary 5 Year Budget Plan Team. Shelley will serve as a chair of the Events Committee for 2010-11. Amy is currently Treasurer of the Swanson Elementary PTO, does the bookkeeping for the Elmbrook Baseball Association and helps run an awning company in Downtown Milwaukee. Amy will serve as a chair of the Grants Committee for 2010-11.
In addition, Kurt Andrae of Elm Grove was elected to the board of directors for a 3 year term (2011-2014). Kurt is Vice President of Commercial Real Estate at WaterStone Bank and serves as Director of the UW-Whitewater Foundation. He will act as a board advisor, sit on the Finance Committee, and shadow the current treasurer in 2010-11. Kurt will officially assume the Treasurer position beginning in 2011.
The following community members will continue to serve on the Elmbrook Education Foundation board of directors next year: Jeanne Allen (Treasurer), Jennifer Morales, Megan Susko, Stacy Kosmatka, Connie Menchal, Brian Kilb, Scott Botcher and Dorothy Smaglick. Laura Schmidt will continue to serve as Executive Director.
The Elmbrook Education Foundation would like to thank Ann Rieger, Cheryl Milnes and Rachel Lyon who have completed their terms on the Elmbrook Education Foundation board of directors. Ann Rieger, attorney and partner at Davis & Kuelthau, was a board member from 2007-2010, served as legal counsel for the Foundation and chaired the finance committee. Cheryl was a board member from 2007-2010 and served on the events and scholarship committees. Rachel was a board member from 2009-2010 and served as Executive Secretary for the Foundation and served on the events committee.
The Foundation is currently seeking additional volunteers who are interested in sitting on committees led by Foundation board members. Please refer to the Elmbrook Education Foundation web site at www.elmbrookeducationfoundation.com or contact the Foundation at elmbrookeducationfoundation@gmail.com if you are interested in more information.
In 1958, three $500 scholarships were awarded to Brookfield High School students by a volunteer group of parent and community members. It has since grown into a community wide scholarship program made possible through the generosity of honorary/memorial funds, community groups, businesses and school PTOs. Having the EEF administer the program helps ensure that the greatest number of seniors can be honored by our community each year. The EEF takes great care to select recipients that meet the criteria provided by scholarship sponsors. Nearly $1,000,000 in scholarships has been awarded to our graduating seniors through the Elmbrook Education Foundation.
Last month, 22 students from Brookfield Central and Brookfield East received a $1500 scholarship during their respective Senior Honors Celebrations. The Foundation also helped identify candidates for 3 four year scholarships administered by the Ramiah Family. All scholarship students exhibit educational excellence, leadership, and service to their school and community. On behalf of the Elmbrook Education Foundation, congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients and best of luck to the Class of 2010!

In Memory of Irven Hoesly .....
Irven “Irv” Hoesly passed away on May 5, 2010 at the age of 87. Irv had a long career as a teacher and served as the first principal of Pilgrim Park Middle School from 1966 until he retired in 1985. Even in retirement, he was forever learning and forever the educator. He was an active part of our community and served as a member of the Elmbrook Golden K Club, the VFW Post, and the American Legion Post. All three of his children and four of his 6 grandchildren (Lingle family) graduated from Elmbrook Schools.
His family is establishing a memorial fund within the Elmbrook Education Foundation to honor Irv’s passion for education. Memorials can be made payable to the Elmbrook Education Foundation with a subject line of “Irven Hoesly Fund”. Memorials can be sent to the family or the EEF (P.O. Box 206, Brookfield WI 53008). All gifts to this fund will be acknowledged with the family.
Irven Hoesly's full obituary can be found on JSOnline.

In 2009, the EEF established a permanent endowment in honor of its 50th anniversary. This endowment is currently held by the Waukesha County Community Foundation. It is an integral component of the Elmbrook Education Foundation's long term funding strategy and provides yet another opportunity for the community to get involved in supporting our community's public schools and their students.
In addition to the endowed and restricted scholarship funds highlighted in a prior post, the following endowment sub-funds have been established by our community.
Unless otherwise desired, honorees (or their families in the case of a memorial) are notified of donations made in their honor. All gifts are included in the donor/honoree list maintained by the Foundation and become a permanent part of the legacy of the Elmbrook Education Foundation.
For additional information, please refer to the Foundation web site at www.elmbrookeducationfoundation.com or e-mail the Foundation at elmbrookeducationfoundation@gmail.com.

The Elmbrook Education Foundation's Annual Foundation Dinner was sponsored by Boldt Construction, C.G. Schmidt Construction, and Plunkett Raysich Architects and hosted by the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts on 2/28/10.
A district-wide crowd of approximately 200 guests enjoyed dinner prepared on-site by Carrabba’s Italian Grill, coffee service by Caribou Coffee (Bluemound), and casino games sponsored by Casino Party Specialists. Got Gold? Parties was on hand to purchase gold at unheard of prices from those that brought in their unwanted or broken gold for cash.
Guests had the opportunity to win a myriad of different gifts donated by area businesses and residents for the benefit of our Elmbrook Schools!
At the end of the evening, Bob Dolan (Dolan Productions) and Chris Thompson (SDE, CIO) provided a short overview of the SMART Response systems to be funded by the Foundation to assist with the implementation of the new middle school math curriculum. SMART Response provides staff with real time assessments that help them differentiate daily lesson plans for the benefit of all students. See prior blog post on this project.
Fourth grade teachers (Dan Gebauer, Kristin Olson, and Shane Radosevich) and students (Riley, Leah, and Zack) participated in a round of "Are You Smarter Than a Fourth Grader' against Elmbrook administrators (Dr. Matt Gibson, Keith Brightman and Eileen Depka) using SMART Response. The Fourth Graders won hands down! The audience played along to get a feel for what our students will experience once the new SMART Response systems are implemented.
A reverse auction was held to raise funds specifically for SMART Response. To date, the Foundation has received nearly $10,000 in directed donations towards this $30,000 campaign. Please contact the Foundation if you would like to contribute or become a sponsor of the SMART Response campaign.
It was great to see so many people from across the District come out to socialize and support the Foundation at such a beautiful venue! The Sharon Lynne Wilson Center of the Arts continues to be a true facility partner of the School District of Elmbrook.
The Sharon Lynne Wilson Center will once again sponsor two continuing education scholarships administered by the Elmbrook Education Foundation to a 2010 graduate from each High School who has been active in the arts.
On behalf of the entire board of directors, the EEF would like to extend sincere appreciation to the event committee (Jennifer Morales, Shelley Botchek, Michelle Uczen, Rachel Lyon, Mardi Kemp, and Laura Schmidt) for providing the leadership for this year's event. The Foundation is excited to invite everyone back to attend this event again next year!
The Foundation depends on the generosity of its annual sponsors, event sponsors, raffle/auction donors, event guests and volunteers to reach its goals every year and is very appreciative of their ongoing support. The Foundation would also like to recognize Mike & Mary Altschaefl who acted as a Scholar level sponsor for this event.

The Elmbrook Education Foundation was founded by volunteers back in 1958 to support the community's value on continuing education. To date, close to $1,000,000 has been awarded in scholarships to assist our graduates attend institutions of higher learning. The Foundation's scholarship program now provides between 20-28 $1,500 scholarships each and every year making it the single largest community based scholarship program in the region. Most scholarships are sponsored by area businesses, civic organizations and honorary/memorial funds. The Foundation administers the program on their behalf at no cost in an effort to honor the most graduating seniors each and every year. Without the Foundation to administer the program, many of these scholarships would all go to the same few students. Recipients are matched to donor criteria and are awarded to students planning to attend both universities and technical schools. Some awards are based on financial need. Since the Foundation receives a large pool of applications, it is easier to find just the right recipient for each scholarship. Recipients are held confidential until Seniors Honors nights in May. The scholarships are awarded in the donor's name and are recognized throughout the District in a variety of publicity mediums.
NEW IN 2010 - COMMUNITY NOMINATIONS ACCEPTED FOR SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS!
The Foundation would like to give the community the opportunity to nominate a graduating Brookfield Central or Brookfield East student for consideration of an Elmbrook Education Foundation Scholarship. Who better to help identify the recipients of our community's scholarships than the community in which the students have grown up, studied, worked, and served! If you know of a student that just simply stands out because of their initiative, character and willingness to serve ... please take a moment to nominate them using the form on the Foundation's web site (www.elmbrookeducationfoundation.com). Nominations are due on or before March 12, 2010.
FOCUS ON THE RAMIAH FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
The Ramiah Family established a scholarship program to assist minority students in continuing their education. It was later expanded to include Elmbrook to provide opportunities to attend institutions of higher learning to those that otherwise might lack the necessary means to achieve this goal. This program provides the opportunity for minority students from both BEHS and BCHS to apply for a 4 year scholarship! Terri (BCHS, class of 2001) and Daena (BCHS, class of 2005) now assist their parents in the administration of this scholarship program. Additional information can be found on the Foundation's web site (www.elmbrookeducationfoundation.com).
FOCUS ON EEF HONORARY/MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
Our honorary/memorial scholarship funds are especially meaningful to our students as they provide a long term connection to someone very special who has made, or continues to make, a difference in the lives of our Elmbrook students. For example,
Nancy Marsho Honorary Scholarship Fund: This scholarship was first awarded in 2004 to honor the retirement of Nancy Marsho who had been the principal at Tonawanda El for 12 years. Students who attended Tonawanda between 1992-2004 will remember her fondly. Nancy's educational philosophy and belief was always "what's best for kids." She believed in Tonawanda as part of the Elm Grove community. It was at her direction that retirement gifts be donated to the Elmbrook Education Foundation for the benefit of Elmbrook’s students. Tonawanda has pledged support for this scholarship through 2016 when the last of Nancy's students graduate from BEHS.
Daniel Neuens Memorial Scholarship Fund: Daniel Neuens received a Lancer-Spartan scholarship when he graduated from Brookfield East High School in 1965. Dan had been very active in both cross country and track. The year following his graduation, he was hit by a car while running home from his parent's local gas station. The family established a scholarship fund in his name as a way of connecting Daniel to Brookfield East. An athletic award was also created in his honor and a plaque can now be found in the athletic department hallway of BEHS. In 2010, a final scholarship will be awarded in his name in honor of his parents who have recently passed.
Jacqueline Craig Memorial Scholarship Fund: Jacqueline Craig acted as a true student advocate in her role as a guidance counselor at BCHS for nearly 30 years. To honor her love of the UW marching band, this memorial fund was created to provide an annual scholarship to a BCHS student active in band since its inception in 2001. This scholarship is especially meaningful to the Foundation because of the amount of energy, support and vision Jacqueline provided the Foundation as a board member.
Jim Briscoe Honorary Scholarship Fund: This endowed fund was established by a single anonymous donor who wanted to honor Jim for his many years of leadership at BCHS as principal from 1996-2002. This fund is permanent in that a scholarship is awarded out of the proceeds that this fund generates on an annual basis.
Charles Turner Honorary Scholarship Fund: This fund was established to honor Charles for the amount of support and encouragement he provided Brookfield Central’s athletes as physical education teacher and coach from 1965-2003 (officially retired in 1989). This fund provides a scholarship to a BCHS student who has been active in track or cross country each year.
Brookfield Woman’s Club Scholarship Fund: This fund was established in 2006 when the club disbanded after 62 years of tireless service to our community. The club wanted to do something that would benefit the community for years to come. Given the School District of Elmbrook is a key resource for our community, they decided to donate their reserves to the Elmbrook Education Foundation to fund a scholarship at each High School from 2006-2014.
If you are interested in more information on how to establish an honorary/memorial scholarship fund, please contact the Foundation's Executive Director, Laura Schmidt, at elmbrookeducationfoundation@gmail.com.
FOCUS ON OUR CIVIC AND BUSINESS SPONSORS
The Foundation simply could not meet its commitments to the graduating class of 2010 without the support of our civic organizations and our local businesses who sponsor scholarships on an annual basis. To date, the following businesses have pledged support for one or more scholarships for the class of 2010:
Additional donations towards the scholarship program have been received from the following:
If you are interested in more information about the benefits associated with becoming a scholarship donor/sponsor, please contact the Foundation's Executive Director, Laura Schmidt, at elmbrookeducationfoundation@gmail.com.

The Elmbrook Education Foundation kicked off the 2009-2010 school year with it's first community-wide event, Ladies Night sponsored by Pasternak & Zirgibel, S.C., on December 1st at the Westmoor Country Club.
Ladies Night was oversold at 310 guests making this the largest Ladies Night event yet! "Participation in this year's event is a testament to the value our guests place on the Foundation's role in sustaining the quality of the Elmbrook School District" said Dorothy Smaglick, Foundation President.
Guests had the opportunity to socialize with ladies from across the Elmbrook School District, enjoy delicious hors d'oeuvres and desserts, and take a chance to win one of the fabulous raffle/auction/mystery bag items donated by our local business community.
The event committee added a few new activities to this year's event.
"Got Gold?", an independent gold buyer, purchased unwanted gold from Ladies Night guests. Gold was selling at an all time high! Over $16,000 in cash was paid to Ladies Night guests along with an additional donation of approximately $2,500 to benefit the Foundation's grant programs.
WineStyles on Bluemound hosted a wine tasting and provided an opportunity for guests to purchase bottles of wine for the holidays. Rendell Thomas, owner, donated 100% of all sales .... over $2,700 ... to the Foundation to benefit their educational grant programs.
Babboni Photography of Brookfield donated all photos taken the night of the event. In addition, they kicked off a new program that provides special discounts and a $50 donation to the Elmbrook Education Foundation for any client who mentions the Foundation at time of sale.
Lia Sophia jewelry distributor, Kelly Frank, was also on hand selling jewelry with all profits donated back to the Foundation.
Next Door of Sendik's Towne Centre sponsored a mini-fashion show featuring Ladies Night guests ... including Laurie Pasternak (far right), representative from the event's titled sponsor, Pasternak & Zirgibel, S.C.. The fashion show preceded a live auction for a shopping spree at the Next Door.
"The Foundation depends on the generosity of its annual sponsors, event sponsors, raffle/auction donors, event guests and volunteers to reach its goals every year. We are so thankful for their ongoing support" said Laura Schmidt, Executive Director of the Elmbrook Education Foundation.
Local men and Brookfield Central's key club provided the volunteer staff for the evening.
The Foundation would like to extend a special thank you to their scholar level supporting event sponsors: Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare - Elmbrook Memorial Hospital, Swanson Elementary PTO, and Anonymous (Resident).
A complete list of sponsors can be found on the Foundation's web site.

The Elmbrook Education Foundation just completed its Fall Grant Cycle. Innovation grants provide supplementary funding for projects that can not be supported by the District Operating or Building Unit Budgets. In most cases, the Foundation provides supplementary funding in addition to funds raised by students, curricular departments, and/or PTO's for needed projects.
The Foundation strives to fund projects that represent an innovation in instructional practices for a particular school. From there, the Foundation works with the District to share project experiences District-wide with the hope that other schools can benefit from their experiences. The following grants were recently approved:
School-wide Mosaic Project (Applicant - Kristen Wolf, Brookfield El; $1,450):
Supplementary funding will be provided to bring in a guest artist (Carrie O'Malley) who will work with all students at all grade levels to learn about the history of the mosaic art form and then collectively design and construct a mosaic wall at the front of the school.
This project was successfully done at Swanson Elementary in 2008-09 with partial funding from the Elmbrook Education Foundation.
Laptop Integration into Daily Workshop Activities (Applicant - Rachelle Russell, Brookfield El; $1,500):
Rachelle is one of the District's technology leaders in that she continually looks for new ways to leverage technology to improve instructional practices. This grant will purchase four inexpensive laptops to provide internet access to extend activities available for readers, writers, and math workshops. They would be leveraged by a small group at a time. The internet resources available provide new opportunities for differentiation to meet the needs of both special needs and high ability learners.
Applied Technology Document Camera (Applicant - Anthony Christian, BCHS, $1,000):
The use of document cameras is an extension of the District's Technology Plan that remains unfunded. Document cameras are especially useful in classes where the teacher has to demonstrate something for the class that is not easily seen .... think of it as a 3D overhead projector. It can instantaneously transform any work, object or demonstration into a digital image on the SMART board. This grant will provide Engineering, CAD, Electronics and Small Engine classes the ability to more effectively demonstrate classroom activities and work products to a large group.
Weather Station to Extend Science Curriculum (Applicant - Julie Gillette, BCHS; $1,405.60):
The weather station will enable science classrooms to collect atmospheric data that is not currently possible. This data is especially important to Earth Sciences, Chemistry and AP Environmental classes. Developing experience in the use of technology to collect atmospheric data is especially important for preparing students who will encounter these same technologies outside of the classroom. This project builds on successful project experiences at other District schools.
Poetry Workshop and Performance (Applicant - Honore Shiro, BCHS, $1,500):
A prior BCHS graduate and professional poet (Joe Basilo) will be providing a workshop focused on poetry and the writing process with select students (students must apply to participate). In addition, 3 separate presentations will be scheduled to share workshop concepts and workshop participant works with BCHS English students.
Writing Workshop (Applicants - Sara Gull/Karen Duren, Brookfield Elementary; $1,350):
Supplementary funding will be provided to host a professional author, Steven Kellogg, to present information on the writing process in a school-wide assembly. Classroom activities will reinforce concepts shared and all students will have an opportunity to write and illustrate their own book. The author will visit individual classrooms to support these extension activities. This author will also be visiting Burleigh Elementary to conduct a similar workshop.
Miniature Golf for Special Needs Students (Applicant - Marty Emery, Fairview South; $1,500):
Supplementary funding will be provided to purchase a miniature golf course and adaptive equipment for use at the school. Equipment will also be made available for families to check out for use on family outings with their student. A miniature golf course will help develop hand-eye coordination, striking skills, and life skills such as creative thinking, cooperation, and sportsmanship. It will foster a love for an activity that students can successfully do with family and friends. This course will be especially helpful for students with autism and multiple disabilities.

The Elmbrook Education Foundation has recently announced a commitment to provide a SMART Response system to every math classroom in both Middle Schools in support of the implementation of the District’s new Middle School math curriculum. The new math curriculum provides additional opportunities for students to develop higher abstract thinking skills.
SMART Response systems provide real time assessments of student learning. This assists the teacher in efficiently and effectively differentiating instruction so that every student both understands the material and has a chance to learn something new every day.
SMART Boards & SMART Response Units
The District's Technology Plan includes the use of SMART Boards and complimentary technologies to more actively engage students in their daily lessons. Students can interact with the information displayed on the SMART Board in a variety of ways. SMART Response systems are uniquely designed to engage students in the assessment of their knowledge on a particular subject in a fraction of the time it would take using more conventional methods.
The teacher develops online assessments for pre/post testing of unit material and/or understanding of a specific daily lesson. The students each receive a remote control that allows them to interact with the online assessment and track their progress. Teachers can instantaneously evaluate their class as a whole and can quickly assess which students need more help or a greater challenge.
SMART Response systems have been leveraged successfully in other buildings. Earlier this year, a Foundation Innovation Grant was awarded to be shared by the 3rd grade team at Dixon Elementary to support math instruction with great success!
"It is exciting to see how the use of SMART Response in the classroom can provide so much information I need to effectively differentiate for students. It's a wonderful way to keep students engaged in the activities as you monitor their learning and growth. It has brought a whole new of level of engagement to our math lessons. Students now look forward to answering questions, and there are more student discussions and reflections, on what they are learning." Sandy Traylor, 3rd grade math teacher.
Unfortunately, the purchase of additional SMART Response systems can not currently be supported by the District’s operating budget. Those that are using them have purchased them independently as PTO or Foundation grant money is made available. Unfortunately, this approach does not ensure the best price, needed technical support/training, or compatibility with the building’s technology plans. Certainly, it lacks the District wide focus that the Foundation is committed to support.
Consequently, the Foundation has partnered with the District to provide a more cohesive plan for procurement, training, and implementation that is specifically focused on supporting the new Middle School math curriculum. The Foundation has advanced the funds needed to cover the cost of the first stage of this project with plans to raise the remaining funds to complete the project by June of 2011. Over the summer, math leads were trained on the SMART Response systems and attended workshops on how to effectively develop online assessments. Feedback on the use of the use of SMART Response to enhance math instruction at both Middle Schools has been very positive.
“I see the use of SMART Response as a great way to ‘spot check’ and assess student learning. Since the responses are instant, a teacher can receive detailed feedback immediately and make instructional adjustments. We will be able to focus on the learning needs of an entire group or use the results to differentiate on an individual basis. In addition, the use of technology is a proven way to engage and motivate students”. Sue Hartmann, 8th grade math teacher.
The math team leads for each grade level will receive their SMART Response systems in November and will develop online assessments to support the new curriculum. These new online assessments will then be shared with all math teachers in both Middle Schools. Additional SMART Response units will be purchased and delivered to the remaining math classrooms as funds allow.

About the Elmbrook Education Foundation
The Foundation has awarded continuing education scholarships for over 50 years.
In 2001, the Foundation expanded its to include Innovation Grants to support students and staff who submit creative ideas for improving education in our Elmbrook schools. Innovation Grants provide up to $1,500 in funding for these projects with the hope that these project experiences are shared within teams, buildings and across the District to encourage others to keep trying new things.
In 2008, the Foundation introduced Super Grants to directly support projects tied to the District’s strategic plan that can not be funded out of the current operating budget. The first Super Grant was awarded in 2008 - a Technology Grant of $15,000 to each High School. The SMART Response Middle School Math Technology Super Grant is planned to be complete by June 2011. The Foundation will then partner with the Elementary Schools to develop a focus for the Foundation’s third Super Grant cycle.
Through the Scholarship, Innovation Grant and Super Grant Programs, the Elmbrook Education Foundation continues its long history of supporting the students within the Elmbrook School District.

In 1958, three $500 scholarships were awarded to Brookfield High School students by a volunteer group of parent and community members. It has since grown into a community wide scholarship program made possible through the generosity of individuals, community groups, businesses and school PTOs. Having the EEF administer the program helps ensure that the greatest number of seniors can be honored by our community each year. The EEF takes great care to select recipients that meet the criteria provided by scholarship sponsors. As we celebrate over 50 years of community service, approximately $915,500 in scholarships has been awarded to our graduating seniors through our organization. This week, 22 students from Brookfield Central and Brookfield East received a $1500 scholarship to during their respective Senior Honors Celebrations. These students not only exhibit educational excellence, but also leadership and service to their school and community. On behalf of the Elmbrook Education Foundation, congratulations to this year’s Lancer-Spartan Scholarship recipients and best of luck to the Class of 2009!
Sponsored Scholarship Awards
Memorial and Honorary Scholarships
EEF memorial and honorary funds begin as a single donation or a collection of donations and are established to honor someone special for their impact on the Elmbrook School District.
The Jacqueline Craig Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor her dedication and student advocacy during her 30 year career as guidance counselor at BCHS. It was her first and only job. Jacqueline was being treated for breast cancer but passed unexpectedly from a brain tumor. She was only 53. Jacqueline loved the UW Band; consequently, this memorial fund has provided an annual scholarship to a BCHS student active in band since its inception in 2001. This is the final year of the Jacqueline Craig Memorial; consequently, the Foundation asked one of her prior students (Mary Wacker, Head Forensics Coach at BEHS) to present this year’s award on Jacqueline’s behalf. “She would track down students and place opportunities in their hands vs. making them come to her … she would make sure they were ready for whatever they wanted to do when they graduated”, said Mary.
The Nancy Marsho Honorary Scholarship Fund was established in 2004 to honor her retirement as principal at Tonawanda El for 12 years. Students who attended Tonawanda between 1992-2004 will remember her fondly. These students are now part of Elmbrook’s graduating classes of 2004-2016. Nancy's educational philosophy and belief was always "what's best for kids." She set high standards for her staff and students and, true to research, everyone reached for and achieved her expectations. She believed in Tonawanda as part of the Elm Grove community. It was at her direction that retirement gifts be donated to the Elmbrook Education Foundation for the benefit of Elmbrook’s students. Since then, a scholarship has been awarded each year to a prior Tonawanda student in her name. When the initial funds ran out, the Tonawanda PTO voted to continue to support the scholarship. Nancy Marsho continues to live locally and was invited to award her scholarship directly this year.
The Jim Briscoe Endowment Fund was established by a single anonymous donor who wanted to honor him for his many years of leadership at BCHS as principal from 1996-2002. This endowment provides a scholarship to a BCHS senior in Jim’s name every year. Jim is now serving as a superintendent in IL.
The Charles Turner Honorary Scholarship Fund was established to honor him for the amount of support and encouragement he provided Brookfield Central’s athletes as physical education teacher and coach from 1965-2003 (officially retired in 1989). This fund provides a scholarship to a BCHS student who has been active in track or cross country each year.
The Brookfield Woman’s Club Honorary Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 when the club disbanded after 62 years of tireless service to our community. The club wanted to do something that would benefit the community for years to come. Given the School District of Elmbrook is a key resource for our community, they decided to donate their reserves to the Elmbrook Education Foundation to fund a scholarship at each High School from 2006-2014.

Background
Excellent education requires great ideas, creative teachers, engaged students and up-to-date facilities/equipment. The Foundation’s Educational Grant Program was developed to help fund projects that support the mission of the Elmbrook School District by helping innovative staff implement and share ideas that enhance the education of Elmbrook students. Sharing their successes serves to inspire others and subsequently benefits the entire District.
Since 2001, the Foundation has funded nearly $215,000 in grants benefitting eleven schools across the district.
Foundation Grant Cycles
“Innovation grants” help students and staff get their ideas off the ground. “Continuation grants” help the rest of the district benefit from their experiences. Grants of up to $1,500 are available in both categories in the Fall and Spring each year. The EEF grant review committee includes Principals and PTO representatives from each level. In addition, the grant committee consults with the district’s Chief Information Officer, Chris Thompson, to make sure technology projects will receive preferred pricing and be adequately supported once implemented.
Spring Grant Package Approved
Elmbrook Education Foundation’s Spring Grant Package was approved by the EEF Board of Directors on 3/16/09 and will allow the following projects to be pursued:
Curricular Projects: The Foundation supports staff ideas on how to extend curriculum in ways that engage and inspire students. Many of these programs are in a proof of concept stage with hopes that lessons learned can be shared district wide.
Interactive Response Systems: The Senteo system provides opportunities for real time assessment of instructional strategies and student understanding of material (i.e. assists with differentiation and daily instruction). It is an innovative extension of SMARTboard technology and therefore complements the District’s Technology Plans; however, Senteo’s can not be included in the District’s operating budget. The Foundation is funding a grant for a Senteo Interactive Response System at Dixon and Brookfield Elementary to assist with Everyday Math, and at Brookfield East to benefit the Science department.
Student Run Business: The Foundation supports programs that involve students in planning and implementation. The Foundation provided a grant to assist the students of Brookfield Central High School in developing a student run business for engraving/graphics projects. In addition to the benefits this program would provide to the students, this business could also provide a low cost valuable service to the community once fully funded.
“The grant review process is so rewarding ... we are inspired by the innovative ideas developed to continually improve the student experience in the School District of Elmbrook,” said the Foundation’s Executive Director Laura Schmidt. “Our goal is support high-impact projects that all schools will benefit and learn from.”
The 2009 Spring Grant Cycle was funded via the proceeds from the Foundation’s past community events and a generous donation from Elmbrook School District staff through their annual appeal. The next EEF grant cycle will occur in Fall 2009.
Super Grant Program
The Foundation also raises funds to award “Super Grants” of up to $15,000 to schools for larger programs. “Super Grants” are intended to support the District and building level PTO’s in their efforts to implement key programs that support the District’s strategic plan. Last year, the Foundation awarded each High School with a Super Grant for $15,000 to support each building’s Technology Plan. The Foundation is now raising funds to benefit Middle School Technology Plans that can not be funded by the District Operating budget.

The Elmbrook Education Foundation celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a Dinner Dance sponsored by Pasternak and Zirgibel, S.C. and hosted by the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts (Brookfield) on 2/22/09.
A sell out crowd of 210 guests enjoyed dinner by Carrabba’s Italian Grill (locally owned and operated by Tony Iannice), coffee service by Caribou Coffee (Bluemound), and dance lessons by instructors from Danceworks (Milwaukee).
At the end of the evening, Bob Dolan (Dolan Productions) and Tom Gehl (School Board Member) spoke and a video production highlighting the work of the Foundation was shared with the crowd. The video was produced by Brookfield High School Senior, Ryan Kolter. Each guest was provided a scroll featuring the Foundation’s scholarship recipients over the past 50 years.
It was great to see so many people from across the District come out to socialize and support the Foundation! Over $25,000 was raised to benefit the Foundation's Educational Grant and Continuing Education Scholarship programs. This event also resulted in the development of two new fine arts scholarships sponsored by the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center of the Arts which continues to be a true facility partner of the School District of Elmbrook.
On behalf of the entire board of directors, the EEF would like to extend sincere appreciation to Dea Fotsch and Jennifer Morales who volunteered to chair the event this year! Everyone had the opportunity to relax, spend time with friends, and have an opportunity to win many great prizes thanks to their efforts! The Foundation is excited to host this event again next year!
The Foundation depends on the generosity of its annual sponsors, event sponsors, raffle/auction donors, event guests and volunteers to reach its goals every year. We are so thankful for their ongoing support. All donors are featured on the Foundation’s web site (www.elmbrookeducationfoundation.com). While many other neighboring Education Foundations are relatively young in comparison, the Elmbrook Education Foundation (EEF) has been in existence for fifty years, and is comprised of private individuals from our community with a heart for involvement in the priceless commodity that is the lives of our students and their schools. And in so doing, I believe they make our community a healthier, more vibrant place to live.We encourage your comments but will strive to remove discussion that contains personal attacks, racial slurs, profanity or other inappropriate material as outlined in our guidelines. v Lancer-Spartan Scholarship Recipients just starting out after High School,
v Staff members who wanted to try something new and needed funding to see if their idea would benefit their students
v Students impacted by projects funded by the Foundation
v Community members who volunteer their time to support the Foundation
v Residents who attend Foundation events and gain a sense of community while by supporting a key community resource.
The concept of an Education Foundation is not new. Education Foundations are now prevalent across the country in those communities where the excellence of the Public Education System is a key component to achieving the community’s vision and its ability to continue to attract residents. Elmbrook is such a community.
All public schools are under tremendous fiscal constraints today. In a time of revenue caps and declining enrollment, the Elmbrook Education Foundation plays an important role by funding projects that the district would not otherwise have the financial resources to undertake. The EEF sponsored grant program leverages the generosity of the community to ensure that inspired Elmbrook students and staff are able to implement and share their ideas to sustain the level of excellence provided across the Elmbrook School District.
Many other Education Foundations have abandoned their Scholarship Programs to provide additional funding for their Educational Grant Programs. However, the Elmbrook Education Foundation’s History is rooted in the belief that Continuing Education is important for our graduates and have instead expanded its program over time through the continued support of area residents, business, and civic organizations.
The EEF administered scholarship program has consolidated many of the scholarship programs previously provided by community partners and businesses to ensure a fair and objective process that rewards and/or supports as many graduates as possible each year while maintaining the individual selection criteria of each scholarship sponsor. Most years, we are able to award 1 out of every 40 graduating seniors a Lancer-Spartan Scholarship. The EEF administered scholarship program is truly a community based scholarship program.
